Harry Cimino - General Sutter

General Sutter

Harry Cimino’s original wood engraving, "General Sutter", was initially created as the frontispiece illustration to a 1926 book entitled, Sutter’s Gold. Two years later "The Print Connoisseur" published an extensive article upon the art of Harry Cimino. This publisher also acquired a number of his engravings and printed impressions from the original blocks. Pencil signed impressions, such as this portrait entitled, "General Sutter", were limited to an edition of one hundred impressions. "General Sutter" is a fine,, original example of the wood engraved art created by the American artist, Harry Cimino.

Title: General Sutter
Artist: Cimino, Harry (Marion, Indiana, 1898 - New York, 1969)
Date: 1928
Medium: Original Wood Engraving in Three Colors
Publisher: The Print Connoisseur, New York
Note: Harry Cimino: A twentieth century American wood engraver and illustrator, Harry Cimino studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Art Students League, New York. During the 1920’s publishers frequently commissioned Cimino to contribute his wood engravings to illustrate such books as "Gifts of Fortune", "Sutter’s Gold", "The King’s Henchmen", "The Perilous Isle", "Tarboe", "The Harp Weaver" and "Gallion’s Reach". He was also extensively employed by the Marchbanks Company to execute some of its most striking calendar designs. Today the wood engravings of Harry Cimino are included in such major collections as the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
In January, 1928, "The Print Connoisseur" published an article entitled, “The Wood Engravings of Harry Cimino”. To accompany the article this journal printed over twenty Cimino wood engravings from their original blocks for their limited edition of one hundred. "General Sutter" hails from this publication and is one of two engravings hand signed by the artist.
"The Print Connoisseur" published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Lynd Ward, Harry Cimino, Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, wood engravings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America. "General Sutter" was published in January of 1928 in a limited edition of 100 artist signed impressions.
  A Biographical Note:
John Augustus Sutter (1803-1880) was a soldier in the Swiss army. He landed in New York in 1834 and went on extensive travels to such areas as the Oregon Trail, Fort Vancouver, Alaska and Hawaii. In 1839 ‘General’ Sutter arrived at Yerba Buena, a small California settlement now known as San Francisco. The following year he became a Mexican citizen (as California was then a colony of Mexico) and received title to almost 50,000 acres of land around present day Sacramento.
General Sutter’s initial plan was to create an agricultural colony and a number of early California immigrants (including the famous Donner party) enlisted in his settlement. In 1848, Sutter and his associate, James W. Marshall, began construction of a sawmill. Gold was discovered. In part to save his agricultural plans, John Sutter tried to keep the discovery secret. This, however, proved impossible and before long hundreds of prospectors arrived and destroyed his land. Shortly thereafter J. A. Sutter returned east and fought in vain for the remainder of his days for reimbursement of his losses associated with the Gold Rush.
