Norman Kent

Norman Kent - Pierrot Peers Out

Pierrot Peers Out

Norman Kent's original linocut in black and green, Pierrot Peers Out is one of his most fascinating works of art. From the back wings a Pierrot stretches his head as far as possible to view the ballerina presently performing on the stage. The entire composition is a masterful examination of substance, shapes, shadows, lines and tones.

Pierrot Peers Out was created by the American artist, Norman Kent and published by The Print Connoisseur in October of 1929. This original linocut is signed in the block with the artist's distinctive monogram and also signed in pencil by Norman Kent.

Title: Pierrot Peers Out
Artist: Kent, Norman (Pittsburgh, 1903 - Rochester, NY, 1972)
Date: 1929
Medium: Original Color Linocut
Publisher: The Print Connoisseur, New York
Note: Norman Kent: A talented watercolorist, illustrator, painter, woodcut and linocut artist, Norman Kent graduated with honors from the Mechanics Institute, Rochester, NY, in 1925. Winning a competition he was awarded a full scholarship to the Art Students League in New York where he finished his studies under both Leftwich Dodge and Alan Lewis. Lewis was a great woodcut artist in his own right and was a key influence upon the development of Norman Kent's art.
After completing his education Norman Kent moved to Buffalo where he worked as a free lance illustrator for a number of magazines, such as Outlook and Fortune. His first one-man show was held in Buffalo at the Grosvenor Library in 1928. In 1929 Norman Kent moved to nearby Rochester, NY, and exhibited his art throughout the United States. Galleries in which his fine art is represented include The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum, the New York Public Library, the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery and Syracuse University. Recently, Georgetown University acquired an almost complete collection of Kent's woodcuts and linocuts and lists more than two hundred works of his graphic art in its permanent collection.
Norman Kent was the long time editor of American Artist Magazine. He was also a friend and working companion to such artists as Charles Burchfield and Andrew Wyeth. Burchfield, in fact, championed Kent's art and wrote several perceptive articles upon his woodcuts and linocuts. In one such article Burchfield commented,
"Mr. Kent, it is plainly apparent has all the elements necessary for the making of an excellent engraver -- draftsmanship, construction, skill in cutting, etc., but to me one of the outstanding qualities of his work is his feeling for bold pattern and design, a quality that I believe will carry him far. This is to be seen in both his portraits and landscapes. He has the true 'block' feeling; you would not hesitate about what his medium was if you did not know. The material he uses seems to matter little, whether it is wood or linoleum." *
Source: The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of 100 each contained a signed impression in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Norman Kent, Lynd Ward, Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
Edition: For the October, 1929 limited edition issue The Print Connoisseur commissioned Norman Kent for six original prints -- four woodcuts and two linocuts. Pierrot Peers Out was the only work of art to be printed in colors and hand signed by the artist. The other original prints were signed in the block with Kent's distinctive monogram.
