Note:	Frederick Garrison Hall: During the 1920's Frederick Garrison Hall was one of America's most sought after etchers. His training was first in the profession of architect and only in his thirties did he turn towards the visual arts. Studying first under William Paxton and then under Henri Royer, Hall created his first original etching in 1918. By 1920 his distinctive style was in great demand and during the following ten years he created a number of memorable etchings depicting the cities and landscapes of America, France and Italy.
	Frederick Garrison Hall was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers and the American Federation of Arts. Today his etchings are included in the following collections; Library of Congress, Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, and the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy.
	Frederick Hall was equally adept as both an architectural and landscape etcher. With its meticulous details, atmospheric qualities and striking compositional elements, By the Pond is a fine example of Hall's art.
Source:	The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
	In the March, 1921 number of The Print Connoisseur Hall's art was the subject of an illustrated article entitled, "The Etchings of Frederick Garrison Hall", by A. Rihani. This original etching, By the Pond, was commissioned as a frontispiece for this article.

Condition:	Printed upon laid paper and with full margins as published by The Print Connoisseur in March of 1921. Signed in the plate with Hall's distinctive 'h' monogram to the lower right. Containing very faint water staining along the extreme upper margin else a finely printed impression with full burr and in excellent condition throughout. By the Pond represents a prime, original example of the great landscape art of Frederick Garrison Hall.
