Juvenal Sanso

Juvenal Sanso - Lueurs

Lueurs (Twilight)

Juvenal Sanso's original etching and aquatint, "Lueurs" (Twilight) is printed upon heavy, laid paper as published by the 'Print Club of Cleveland' in 1963. This impression is signed by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Both as an original printmaker and as a painter, Juvenal Sanso's artistic technique has been termed as 'poetic surrealism'. This is particularly so in his landscape compositions. "Lueurs" is a striking, original example of the contemporary art created by the Spanish artist, Juvenal Sanso.

Date: 1963
Medium: Original Etching and Aquatint
Publisher: The Print Club of Cleveland (Publication No. 41).

Note: Juvenal Sanso: Although Juvenal Sanso was born in Spain he is rightly considered an artist of the Philippines as he moved to Manila at the age of five. He studied under private tudors until he entered the University of Philippines School of Fine Arts as a special student. In 1951 Sanso won several major awards for his art which enabled him to further his studies in Rome, at the Academia di Belles Artes. He also enrolled at l'Ecole Nationale, in Paris. His first one man show was held there in 1957. Since that time his art has been the subject of major exhibitions in the United States, England, Italy, France and Mexico. Juvenal Sanso currently resides in both Manila and Paris.
Both as an original printmaker and as a painter, Juvenal Sanso's artistic technique has been termed as 'poetic surrealism'. This is particularly so in his landscape compositions where he is often drawn to solitary swamps and tidal flats. Combining consummate draftsmanship with intricate delineations, he creates both a strange and fascinating world containing elements of both dreams and realities.
The Print Club of Cleveland: Lueurs (Twilight) was commissioned by the Print Club of Cleveland in 1963 and published by them in a signed limited edition of 250 impressions. The Print Club of Cleveland is a non-profit adjunct organization and the country's first museum-affiliated print club devoted to the promotion of art and printmaking as a fine art for printmakers and collectors alike. Since its creation in 1919, it has helped to support the growth of the department of prints and drawings at the Cleveland Museum of Fine Arts and has also been a source of great enrichment for collectors of fine prints. During its long life the club has annually commissioned one original etching engraving, lithograph, woodcut and or other form of original graphic art from such fine American artists as John Taylor Arms, Suzanne Anker, Luigi Lucioni, Will Barnet, Mark Tobey, Lyonel Feininger, Henry George Keller, Louis Lozowick, Karl Schrag, David Jansheski, Deborah Remington, and Peter Takal as well as from leading international artists such as Henri Matisse, Edmund Blampied, Jean-Emile Laboureur, Salvador Dali, Michael di Cerbo, Phyllis Sloane, Paolo Boni, Juvenal Sanso and Norman Ackroyd a nd many other outstanding artists.
