Featured Publishers: A few of the publishers included in this page are the Societe des Aqua-Fortistes, the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, John Szoke Graphics, The Print Club of Cleveland, The Montreal Daily Star and Estes and Lauriat. They have published some of the greatest original works of art. If you wish to view the entire list, please go to the www.artoftheprint.com (Featured Publisher's History) page to access this information. You will find a brief history for most of the publishers listed.

Cadart: During the 1850's and 1860's Cadart was the leading French publisher of original etchings. Delatre printed the majority of etchings. Delatre was perhaps one of the greatest printer of all times. Meryon, Whistler, Laurens and Jacquemart are just a few of the artists of the period that had Delatre print their original etchings.

Estes and Lauriat: A Boston publisher during the second half of the nineteenth century, Estes and Lauriat were responsible for the creation of the American Art Review, which promoted original etchings by Thomas Moran, Mary Nimmo Moran, Otto Bacher, Charles Henry Platt and many other fine artists from 1880 through 1882. Although short lived The American Art Review proved a major influence on the revival of American etching. Estes and Lauriat also published a number of portfolios of etchings by European artists such as, the 1887 "Dusseldorf Gallery". which included such etchers as Carl Jutz, Kroener, Volkhart and others.

Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The Gazette des Beaux-Arts began publishing in 1859. From the beginning of its publication the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic works of art. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Appian, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Liebermann, Maclaughlan, Besnard and others and from the beginning of our century to the last publication in 1930 such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Gobo and the American, John Sloan and others from this period responded with original etchings. It is easy to see why original works published by the Gazette Des Beaux-Arts have long been collected.

The 'Societe des Aqua-Fortistes' was founded by Cadart in 1862. Until its demise in 1867, it was responsible for publishing some of the greatest French art of this important era.

The Montreal Daily Star: The Montreal Daily Star (founded in 1867) became a major publisher of original Canadian prints particularly in regard to the Montreal Winter Carnival. Beginning in 1883, it was Canada's first large winter celebration and predated Quebec City's Carnival by eleven years. Highly competitive sporting events took place throughout the city. The Winter Carnival became a hugely successful event. The Montreal Star and competing publishers thus hired Canada's greatest artists to commemorate the activities. One need only mention that three of the major artists covering the Carnival at the time were Henri Julien, William Raphael and Robert Harris. Their original lithographs in this field stand as an important historical and artistic document of nineteenth century Canada.
