Pierre Georges Jeanniot - Le Polo - Spectateurs au Polo

Le Polo 'Spectateurs au Polo' (Polo 'Spectators of Polo)

Pierre-Georges Jeanniot's "Le Polo 'Spectateurs au Polo'" (Polo 'Spectators of Polo) is an original etching printed upon fine hand made, laid paper with the 'Arches' watermark and with large, deckled margins as published in Paris around 1900. 'Le Polo', with its fashionable women and men, is typical of the artistic talents of the French painter, etcher and illustrator, Pierre Jeanniot and is one of his most famous works of original etched art.

Title: Le Polo 'Spectateurs au Polo' (Polo 'Spectators of Polo)
Artist: Jeanniot, Pierre Georges (Geneva, 1848 - Paris, 1934)
Date: c. 1900 - c. 1905
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Pierre-Georges Jeanniot: A late nineteenth and early twentieth century French painter, etcher and illustrator, Pierre Georges Jeanniot is now most famous for his great turn-of-the-century scenes of Paris life. His artistic education began under his father, Pierre-Alexandre Jeanniot (1826-1892), the long time director of the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Dijon. He first exhibited his paintings and watercolours at the Paris Salon of 1872 and initially established his reputation as an artist of military scenes.
Pierre-Georges Jeanniot settled permanently in Paris in 1882. During the following three decades he illustrated a large number of books, including, Le Voyage a Saint-Cloud, Germaine Lacerteux, Tartarin de Tarascon and Les Liasons Dangereuses. He was also a constant contributing artist to La Vie Moderne and was the Editor of Journal Amusant. In 1906 the French Government awarded Pierre-Georges Jeanniot the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur.
In both his original etchings and paintings, Pierre-Georges Jeanniot exhibited both brilliance and originality. Collectors of his art included such fellow artists as Degas and Pissarro. In 1924 F. L. Leipnik wrote,

"Pierre-Georges Jeanniot represents Parisian types in the light of a fantastic imagination. ... The carefully printed plates yield harmonious proofs delightfully expressive of types that range from the fashionable idle to the picturesque poor. Jeanniot observes his subjects at polo or on the beach of a seaside resort, in a restaurant or in the Bois de Boulogne; and he portrays with no less sympathy the workman on his way to the factory or sitting outside a small cafe enjoying a drink and a lively political discussion. "Le Polo", "Sur la Plage" and "Marchande de quatre saisons" are typical of Jeanniot's keen observation and of his style, in which a sometimes fantastic imagination is balanced by a delicate sense of proportion." *
