Title: The Manager and His Dog - OR - A New Way to Keep One's head Above Water
Artist: Sayers, James (Great Yarmouth, 1748 - London, 1823)
Date: 1803
Medium: Original Etching & Aquatint
Publisher: Hannah Humphrey, London
Note: James Sayers: Originally trained as an articled clerk and as an attorney, James Sayers turned to satirical art and etching when he inherited a small fortune from his father. James Sayers's first published etchings date from the early 1780's and are strong attacks upon the political powers of the day, most notably Charles James Fox, Lord North and their followers. Fox, in fact, once stated that the etchings of James Sayers did him, "more mischief than the debates in Parliament or the works of the Press."
The Manager and his Dog or a New Way to Keep One's Head Above The Water is a caricature of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, a well known playwright and politician who was closely allied with Fox. With such etchings, James Sayers gained favour with the Prime Minister, William Pitt, who rewarded him with the post of Marshal of the Court of the Exchequer.
James Sayers was widely admired for both his keen political insights and for his artistic methods of exaggerating the most notable physical defects of those he caricatured. His influence was wide and such great artists as James Gillray used his etchings as a prime source of reference. The National Portrait Gallery in London includes a hand-coloured impression of The Manager and his Dog in its permanent collection. *
Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) is the author of such well known plays as The Rivals (1775), The School for Scandal (1777) and The Critic (1779). He acquired the Drury Lane Theatre in 1776 and, in 1794, both built and managed a new theatre until it was destroyed by fire in 1809. As a supporter of Fox he was a member of parliament from the early 1780's and was eventually awarded the post of treasurer of the navy. Sheridan's last years were not comfortable. He was arrested for debts in 1813 and suffered from mental ailments until his death in 1816.
