Date: 1969

Note: Bernard Schultze: A Major German painter, sculptor and etcher of the latter twentieth century Bernard Schultze studied art at the Berlin Hochschule and at the Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf, from 1934 to 1939. With the commencement of the Second World War (1939-1945), Schulze served as a soldier in the German military and participated in both the Russian and North African campaigns. After the war, Bernard Schultze lived in Flensburg (1945-1947), Frankfurt (1947-1968), New York (1968) and Paris (1968 to 2005). He also travelled and worked in Washington, Ceylon, Thailand, Mexico, Guatemala, Hong Kong and Bali. His wife, Ursula Schultze-Bluhm, was also a leading surrealist painter and etcher.
In 1972, Bernard Schultze was elected a member of the 'Akademie der Kunste' in Berlin. Along with Karl Otto Gotz and others, Schultze co-founded the 'Quadriga' group of artists in 1952. He was also an early member of Cobra. Schultze was awarded the 'Grober Hessischer Kulturpreis' in 1984 and the 'Lovis Corinth Prize' in 1986. During his residence in Cologne Bernard Schultze was awarded the 'Stefan-Lochner-Medal of the City of Cologne' (1990).
Bernard Schultze first gained a strong international recognition when he participated in the famous 1952 Quadriga exhibition. He is best known, however, for his 'Migofs', which he first introduced in 1961. Briefly the 'Migofs' exist somewhere between the animal-plant and human worlds. They appear in Schultze's paintings, sculptures and original prints as metamorphosed creatures, alien to are eyes yet striking a familiar chord within our senses. Migofs are a new, visual mythology which Bernard Schultze brilliantly delineates. Teufelsfuss is of course a fine example of Schultze's Migof art.
Today the art of Bernard Schultze is included in many major museums, such as the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, the Museum Kunstpalast, Dusseldorf, The Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), as well as in other important public and private collections. In 1981-81, the Albertina in Vienna held a retrospective exhibition of his graphic work. In 2000, the Das Staedel Museum, Frankfurt, launched a major retrospective exhibition of his art. The Museum of Modern art, Harvard Busche-Reisinger Museum, Cabridge MA held an exibition of German 20th century sculpure 'Making Myth Modern' (2007), and in 2015, the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, which houses a large number of the artist's work in its permanent collection held a centennial exhibition, 'Bernard Schultze. Zum 100. Geburtag' featuring his art.
