Thomas Garland Greene

Thomas Garland Greene - Cabin at Weston North Toronto

Cabin at Weston (North Toronto)

Thomas Garland Greene's landscape view depicting a cabin in Weston, North Toronto is an original drawing created by the twentieth century Canadian artist. It is dated April 6, 1901 and signed with his 'T. G. G.' monogramme to the lower left. This drawing was possibly a preparatory work of art for a painting or watercolour as Thomas Garland Greene has written extensive observations on the verso, lower left. He writes,

"Ploughed lands this side fence
Other side dry grass
Sky purplish grey, wisps of lighter grey clouds
& sky above light blue, general
Grey effects, sun out but subdued."

Weston was a small village several miles north of Toronto. It has since been absorbed by this ever expanding city and is now part of the region of York. Any rural depiction of Weston is now but a faint memory.

Greene taught art techniques for ten years at the Ontario Ladies College, Whitby, before accepting posts at St. Andrew's College and the Northern Vocational School in Toronto.
As an artist, Thomas Garland Greene was equally accomplished in watercolours and in oils. Although he was commissioned to work on a number of portraits, his major inspiration lay in landscape. As one can see by his meticulous notes on the verso of Cabin at Weston (North Toronto), he was primarily drawn to the shifting effects of nature. In this regard some scholars view Greene's art as a precursor to that of the Group of Seven.
