Kurt Gunther

Kurt Gunther - Der Verlorene Sohn or The Prodigal Son

Der Verlorene Sohn (The Prodigal Son)

Kurt Gunther's original woodcut, "Der Verlorene Sohn" (The Prodigal Son) was engraved by the 20th century German artist in 1930. It was issued by the Munich publishing house of Heinrich Mock and bears that publisher's blindstamp on the verso. This impression of "Der Verlorene Sohn" is signed in pencil by Kurt Gunther to the lower right and titled on the verso.

Surrounded by a charming assemblage of pigs and other livestock, a rustic, barefooted artist works at his easel. This 'prodigal son' might therefore be a self-portrait of Kurt Gunther himself.

Title: Der Verlorene Sohn (The Prodigal Son)
Artist: Gunther, Kurt (Gera, Germany, 1893 - Stradtroda, Thuringia, 1955)
Date: 1930
Medium: Original Woodcut
Publisher: Heinrich Mock, Munich
Note: Kurt Gunther: An important twentieth century German painter and printmaker, Kurt Gunther first studied art under Paul Neidhardt. He then studied at the Kunstakademie, Dresden, under Richard Muller. Two of his fellow students there were George Grosz (1893-1959) and Otto Dix (1891-1969). Both Gunther and Otto Dix were natives of Gera and formed a lifelong and artistically influential friendship. Kurt Gunther first exhibited his art at the end of World War One (1918). His work from this early period is mostly Expressionistic in technique. Within a decade, however, Kurt Gunther (under the urging of Dix) had developed an individual style of Neue Sachlichkeit. Briefly, Neue Sachlichkeit was a movement promoting a more objective technique.
Around 1930, Kurt Gunther became professor of graphic arts at the Kunstakademie. He lost his professorship and his right to exhibit his art shortly after 1933 when the Nazi regime came to power. After the defeat of Germany in the Second World War (1945), Kurt Gunther moved to Thuringia (East Germany) and resumed both his teaching and artistic career. Today the fine art of Kurt Gunther is included in many German public collections. The Kunstsammlung Gera (Gera Museum of Arts) houses an extensive number of Kurt Gunther's paintings and original woodcuts and lithographs in its permanent collection.
