Top Man

William Gropper's original lithograph, "Top Man" is representative of his famous satirical art against big business and big politics. Using a minimum of lines and colors he has here created a powerful image of corrupt life at its height.

This original lithograph originates from the collection of Roger Trlak. It is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in New York around 1970 in the limited edition of only thirty impressions. This original lithograph is signed in pencil by the artist and numbered along the lower margin. "Top Man" is a fine, original example of the famous satirical art created by the American artist, William Gropper.

Note: William Gropper: One of America's greatest twentieth century social and satirical artists, William Gropper studied painting and printmaking under George Bellows at the Ferrer School in San Francisco (1913-14), at the National Academy of Design (1914) and at the New York School of Fine Art (1915-18). He was first employed as a staff artist for The New York Tribune (1919-21) and later for the New York World (1925-27). During this time Gropper also contributed many drawings to Leftist publications such as 'The New Masses' and 'The Liberator'. By the mid 1920's William Gropper had established himself as a major satirical artist and lithography became one of his most potent weapons for launching his attacks against big business and big politics. "Top Man" is representative of his famous satirical art against big business and big politics.
  During the following decades William Gropper achieved a fine reputation around the world. In 1958, for example, he received the Young Israel Prize. Today, many international institutions include examples of his paintings and prints in their collections. The Museum of Modern Art in New York lists over thirty of William Gropper's etchings and lithographs in its permanent collection.
Provenance: Top Man originates from the collection of Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, 'T-1480', on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's untimely death.
