William Gropper

William Gropper - The Budget

The Budget

Some of William Gropper's lithographs and etchings from the 1960's and 1970's explore business life and culture in a less satirical, more gentle manner. Such is the case with "The Budget", where strong lines and colors emphasize the elements of thought and expression on the faces of the principal characters.

This original lithograph is printed upon 'Arches' watermarked paper and with full, deckled margins as published in New York between 1960 and 1970 in an edition of two hundred impressions. It is signed in pencil by the artist and numbered along the lower margin. "The Budget" is a fine, original example of the famous satirical art created by the American artist, William Gropper.

Date: c. 1960 - 1970

He was first employed as a staff artist for The New York Tribune (1919-21) and later for the New York World (1925-27). During this time Gropper also contributed many drawings to Leftist publications such as 'The New Masses' and 'The Liberator'. By the mid 1920's William Gropper had established himself as a major satirical artist and lithography became one of his most potent weapons for launching his attacks against big business and big politics. Some of Gropper's lithographs and etchings from the 1960's and 1970's explore business life and culture in a less satirical, more gentle manner. Such is the case with "The Budget", where strong lines and colors emphasize the elements of thought and expression on the faces of the principal characters.
During the following decades William Gropper achieved a fine reputation around the world. In 1958, for example, he received the Young Israel Prize. Today, many international institutions include examples of his paintings and prints in their collections. The Museum of Modern Art in New York lists over thirty of William Gropper's etchings and lithographs in its permanent collection.
