Title: La 1597
Artist: Gollifer, Sue (Born, Cheshire, England, 1944)
Date: 1969
Medium: Original Silk-Screen
Note: Sue Gollifer: A modern British printmaker, Sue Gollifer has exhibited her art in such countries as the United States, England, Scotland, Spain, France, the Ukraine, Russia, Finland and Korea during the past thirty five years. She began her career as both a teacher and instructor of printmaking techniques in 1969 at the Hastings College of Art. Since that time she has taught at the St. Martins School of Art, Camberwell School of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, Brown University, Rhode Island, and (from 1984 to 1998) at the University of Brighton. Her original prints are today included in the permanent collections of the following institutions; the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Council Collection, the University of Sussex, the University of York, Cambridge Art Gallery, Guildford Art Gallery, South London Gallery, the Scarborough Museum of Art and the Museum of Kharkov, Ukraine.
The artist states, "My work has developed in the last twenty years according to a rigorous programme of formal experiment, through which sets of relationships evolved between shapes, colours and tones. At first these relationships were concerned only with the surface of the work: illusions of depth or movement were made explicit as illusions, by using a systematic grid arrangement and maintaining the symmetry of the overall design." * La 1597 clearly explores these elements of Gollifer's early works.
In her later works, Sue Gollifer became concerned as well with depictions of depth, space and perspective. Computer based imagery, laser scanning and printing are now important aspects of her art.
