Carl Arnold Gonzenbach & Wilhelm Von Kaulbach

Carl Arnold Gonzenbach and Wilhelm Von Kaulbach - Der Sachsische Kunstverein Seinen Mitgliedern The Saxon Art Society and Its Members

Der Sachsische Kunstverein Seinen Mitgliedern (The Saxon Art Society and Its Members)

Carl Arnold Gonzenbach's original etching and engraving, "Der Sachsische Kunstverein Seinen Mitgliedern fur das Jahr 1847" is based upon a design create by Wilhelm Von Kaul. It is printed upon China paper and impressed onto thick wove paper as published by Sachsische Kunstverein (the Saxon Art Society) in Dresden around 1848, also bearing the full title, printer's address and publisher's blindstamp, "Sachsischer Kunst-Verein" along the lower margin. "Zur Erzaehlung 'der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre' von Fr. Schiller is written above the title. "Sachsischer Kunstverein" played a pivotal role in the development of 19th and 20th century German art. It was one of the first institutions to exhibit the art of the Expressionist movement, Die Brucke, in 1905.

This large and impressive etching and engraving is illustrative Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre (The Criminal of Lost Honor) by Friedrich von Schiller. This fascinating tale deals with the psychology of a criminal, Christian Wolf, and the consequences of societal rejection which paves the way from petty to major crimes. This is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the Swiss artist Carl Gonzenbach and one of Germany's great nineteenth century artists, Wilhelm Von Kaul.

Note: Carl Arnold Gonzenbach 'Carl Gonzenbach': A Swiss painter and etcher, Carl Arnold Gonzenbach first studied art in Zurich before specializing in etching and engraving techniques in Darmstadt, under Jacob Felsing. His first engraving (a portrait) was published in 1828. Carl Gonzenbach engraved large plates after the designs of German contemporary artists such as, Wilhelm von Kaulbach, L. Vogel, J. V. Schnorr, M. Muller and G. Konig.
Carl Gonzenbach lived and worked in Munich from 1838 to 1848. He then returned to his native Saint-Gall. Today examples of his art may be seen at the Museum of Saint-Gall (which lists Carl Arnold Gonzenbach's complete graphic oeuvre in its permanent collection) and at the Societe des Artistes.
Der Sachsische Kunstverein Seinen Mitgliedern fur das Jahr 1847 was probably created by Carl Gonzenbach while he still resided in Munich in 1848. It is a large and most impressive work of art which showcases the talents of both Carl Arnold Gonzenbach and Wilhelm Von Kaulbach.
Wilhelm Von Kaulbach: One of Germany's great nineteenth century artists, Wilhelm Von Kaulbach received his first lessons in painting from his father, a goldsmith. In 1821 Kaulbach enrolled in the Academy at Dusseldorf, first studying under and then working with Cornelius. He moved shortly thereafter to Munich and received his first commissions for his art in 1826. In the following decades, Wilhelm Von Kaulbach became one of Germany's best known oil and fresco painters of historical and genre scenes. In 1847 he was named Director of the Munich Academy.
An equally important aspect of Wilhelm Von Kaulbach's career was his work as a designer, both for illustrated books and large, single plate engravings. In fact some of his best known imagery is based upon the writings of Shakespeare, Sterne, Goethe and Schiller. This large engraving seems to be related to a text of Schiller as in smaller letters, above the title, these words are written, "Zur Erzaehlung 'der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre' von Fr. Schiller.
When one studies the engravings and etchings designed by Wilhelm Von Kaulbach, whether they are the satires for Goethe's Reineke Fuchs (1845), the Goethe Gallerie (1859) or his other great illustrative work, one is always struck by the perfection of gesture and expression. In Der Sachsiche Kunstverein seinen Mitgliedern fur das Jahr 1847, each of the many characters portrays a delightfully rendered expression and emotion, right down to the aristocratic boy filling his face with food. This is truly a monumental work of mid nineteenth century German art.
The Saxon Art Society: "Der Sachsische Kunstverein Seinen Mitgliedern fur das Jahr 1847" was published by Sachsischer Kunstverein, Dresden, in 1847. Sachsischer Kunstverein (The Saxon Art Society) played a pivotal role in the development of nineteenth and twentieth century German art. It was founded in 1828 and continued until the devastating fire bombings of Dresden in 1945. Among other accomplishments it was one of the first institutions to exhibit the art of the Expressionist movement, Die Brucke, in 1905.
This impressive etching and engraving is illustrative Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre (The Criminal of Lost Honor) by Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805). First published in 1786, this fascinating tale deals with the psychology of a criminal, Christian Wolf, and the consequences of societal rejection which paves the way from petty to major crimes. The engraving depicts the final sentencing of Wolf. Society has permanently rejected him as he has rejected society.
