| Note: | Mid nineteenth century fashion engravings stand out for their distinction. They were created for a relatively small minority - the upper and middle class woman - and thus detail and fine work were stressed. by 1860, however, with the rise of the industrial revolution, the fashion engraving fell into the hands of mass production. Wood engraving usually replaces steel engraving, and the prints, in general, became slipshod and careless. |
| During its primary years of publication, the Philadelphia based, Graham's Magazine went to the great expense of importing fashion engravings (already hand-colored by French artists) directly from Le Moniteur de la Mode and Le Follet, in Paris. French fashion plates were the most highly prized. These expensive engravings continued to be published by Graham's until 1854, when high costs forced the American publisher to convert to less expensive, domestic wood engraved illustrations. | |
| Paris was the capital for fashion innovation and design. What was in vogue in Paris would be worn by fashionable ladies in Vienna, Berlin, Rome and London and in the States. The hand-coloured French fashion engraving was responsible for filtering the new styles throughout the major cities of Europe and thus represented great wealth to the clothing industry of Paris. No expense was spared to commission talented engravers and colourists for these beautiful works of art. | |
