Title: Coeffure en Gaze Lamme, Camelia et Cheveaux Par Mr. Plaisir Corsage de Velours, Robe de Crepe Pelisse de Satin
Source: Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, Costumes Parisiens, Paris (Ladies' Fashion Journal, Parisian Apparel, Paris)
Date: 1819
Medium: Original Hand - Coloured Engraving
Publisher: Pierre de la Mesangere, Paris
Note: "Le Journal des Dames et des Modes" (Ladies' Fashion Journal, Parisian Apparel, Paris) was an early late 18th century and early 19th century French fashion magazine (1797 to 1839), published in Paris by Pierre de la Mesangere (1761-1831). The publications contained one fashion plate, and in 1798, it included two plates (original hand coloured engravings). These French fashion engravings were also publsihed in London, in such publications as Touwnsend's "Quarterly Selection of Parisian Costumes" (1823-1824), & "Townsend's Monthly Selection of Parisian Costumes" (1825-1888). An original hand coloured engraving published in 1810, "Coeffure en Gaze Lamme, Robe de Crepe Pelisse de Satin" hails from "Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, Costume Parisien, Paris". One of the most interesting decades in fashion history is the 1820's era. Moving dramatically away from the classical influence of the past generation, 1820's fashion gave birth to skirts with a wedge shaped outline and elaborate hair styles, hats and trimmings. The waist moved steadily down towards its natural level and the sleeves became significantly larger. The styles created during this decade clearly influenced future developments throughout the Victorian era and into the early twentieth century.
Paris was the capital for fashion innovation and design. After the final defeat of Napoleon, English and French fashions merged to close accord. What was in vogue in Paris would be worn by fashionable ladies in Vienna, Berlin, Rome and London. The hand-coloured French fashion engraving, such as this original example entitled, "Coeffure en Gaze Lamme, de Crepe Pelisse de Satin", was responsible for filtering the new styles throughout the major cities of Europe and thus represented great wealth to the clothing industry of Paris. No expense was spared to commission talented engravers and colourists for these beautiful works of art. Such great French artists as Gavarni and Vernet produced many fashion engravings at this time.
Unfortunately, original examples of 1820's fashion plates are quite scarce. Unlike the fashion illustrations of the mid and late nineteenth century, which were produced by means of steel engraving or lithography, 1820's fashion art was engraved on copper plates that yielded very few impressions. The truly spectacular clothing design art from this era is therefore in great demand.
