Eclaireurs en Fuite (Scouts in Flight)

Alexandre-Gaston Guignard's original etching and drypoint engraving, "Eclaireurs en Fuite" (Scouts in Flight) is printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with large, full margins as published in New York by Dodd Mead & Company for the portfolio, "Etchings by French Artists" in 1888. It is signed and titled in the plate along the lower margin. This scene depicts a frigid winter landscape two scouts retreat from enemy fire. The lead scout desperately clutches the reigns of the horse of his wounded companion. "Eclaireurs en Fuite" (Scouts in Flight) is a superb, original example of the landscape and military art created by the French artist, Alexandre Guignard.

Note: Alexandre-Gaston Guignard: A French painter and etcher of animals and genre scenes, Alexandre-Gaston Guignard began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon in 1874. His work was awarded medals at the Exposition Universelle in 1883, 1884, 1887 and 1889. Alexandre-Gaston Guignard received the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1891 from the French government. Today the fine art of Gaston Guignard will be found in such international collections as the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C., as well as in public museums in Paris, Nantes, Beziers, Bordeaux and Montauban.
  Eclaireurs en Fuite is a most compelling example of Alexandre-Gaston Guignard's etched art. Within a frigid winter landscape two scouts retreat from enemy fire in the background. In full flight, the lead scout desperately clutches the reigns of the horse of his wounded companion. Every line conveys frantic movement and danger.
  This impression of Eclaireurs en Fuite was published by Dodd Mead & Company, New York in the New York publication of original etchings entitled, Etchings of French Artists. Condition: Printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with large, full margins as published in New York in 1888. Signed and titled in the plate along the lower margin. Bearing the number '475' to the upper right of the plate. This probably indicates that the etching was first published by Cadart, in Paris. Containing several spots of light foxing within the image and two restored tears along the lower margin (well removed from the actual etching), else a strongly printed impression and in good condition throughout. Eclaireurs en Fuite represents a superb, original example of the art of Alexandre-Gaston Guignard.
