Octavio (Oreste) Cortazzo: An Italian born painter and etcher, Octavio (Oreste) Cortazzo was an artist of genre scenes and character studies. He studied art in Paris, under Bonnat, and frequently exhibited at the Paris Salons. In 1889 he was awarded a medal for his art from the Exposition Universelle. Octavio Cortazzo also traveled and worked in Spain and Italy.
Les Buveurs shows Octavio Cortazzo's art at its best. Waistcoats and bottles are cast recklessly aside as more and more alcohol is imbibed. The expressions on all three characters' faces as they hail as passer-by are done with an obvious touch as mastery.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco include several of Octavio Cortazzo's original etchings in its permanent collection, including an impression of Les Buveurs.
This impression of Les Buveurs (The Drinkers) was published by Dodd Mead & Company, New York in the New York publication of original etchings entitled, Etchings of French Artists. Original works of art contributed to Etchings of French Artists. included "Les Deux Fils" by Paul-Leon Jazet, "Eclaireurs en Fuite" by Alexandre-Gaston Guignard, "Les Buveurs" by Octavio Cortazzo, "La Lecon de Musique" by Antonio Casanova y Estorach, "Laveuses a Valliere" by Adolphe Potemont Martial, "Providence" by Alberto Maso Gilli, "Un Uhlan" by Jean Baptiste Edouard Detail, "Pompe du Notre-Dame" by Henri-Alexandre Safrey, "A Goville" by Alfred Alexandre Delauney and others. A note should be made that the Portfolio Etchings by French Artists listed the artist as Octavio Cortazzo (Valencia, 1829 - Madrid, 1896). Les Buveurs was published in this portfolio in 1888.
Les Buveurs (The Drinkers) was first published by France's first important publisher of the etching revival, Alfred Cadart in 1880 for "Publications Vve A. Cadart - L'Eau-Forte en 1880" Trente Eaux-Fortes Originales et Inedites par Trente des Artistes les Plus Distingues, Texte Par Jules Claretie, Paris, Vve A. Cadart, Editeur-Imprimeur, 56, Boulevard Haussman, 56, 1880. However, the 1880 impression contained Cadart's address in the lower margin and the plate number "20" in the upper margin. "L'Eau-Forte en 1880" included thirty original etchings by distinguished 19th century artists, such as, M. Desboutin, A Casanova, P. Heseltine, Paul Jazet, Maxime Lalanne, Edmond Rudaux, Auguste Andre Lancon, A. P. Martial, P. Billet, Edmond Yon, Felicien Rops, Adolphe Appian, Leon Lhermitte, E. Toudouze, R. de los Riods, and others. In 1862 Alfred Cadart (1828-1875), also listed as Alphonse Cadart, founded the Societe des Aqua-Fortistes. Until its demise in 1867, it was responsible for publishing some of the greatest French art from this important decade. Around 1870, Cadart (along with Luquet) reopened his publishing house and continued to commission original etchings from such masters as Jongkind, Bracquemond, Manet, Ribot, Louis Monzies and many others. Almost all of the fine etchings published by Cadart were printed by the master printer, Auguste Delatre. This original etching hails from the edition of Etchings by French Artists, Dodd Mead & Company, New York, 1888.
