Note: One of the leading vehicles for French lithography in the 1830's was Revue des Peintres. Between 1830 and 1839, this Paris based publication featured original lithographs (such as this example) by Alophe, Marie-Alexandre Menut 'Menut Alophe' (Paris, 1812 - 1883). Most, including this example, were printed at the lithographic presses of Aubert, who was also responsible for printing much of the satirical art of Daumier and Gavarni. Pendant La Moisson was commissioned for Revue des Peintres. This Paris publication existed from approximately 1830 to 1839 and featured original lithographs from some of France's finest artists of the era, such as Honore Daumier, Benjamin Roubaud, Jules Lion, Jean-Auguste Bard, Alphonse Bourdin, Marie-Alexandre (Menut) Alophe, Felix Saint-Aulaire and Eugene Lepoittevin. This original lithograph decpics a group of people gathered around an old fortune teller under a tree.
Gabriel Auber, Charles Philipon, & La Maison Aubert: Founded in 1829 by Charles Philipon (Lyons, 1804 - Paris, 1862), La Maison Aubert was a bookshop specializing in satires, the sale of sheet prints, and illustrated books by the likes of Curmer, Janet, Didier and Challamel with illustrations sometimes printed by Aubert. Philipon’s Brother in law Gabriel Aubert (Lyon, 1784 – 1847), a French notary, publisher, printer, and editor of La Caricature, managed the firm of La Maison Aubert. Then around 1835 Aubert founded his own lithographic printing press, Aubert et Cie., Paris and soon after, partnered with Junca, the French lithographer, publisher, and printer, publishing lithographs under the firm name, Aubert et de Junca, Paris. Together, they printed and published some of the finest French lithographs of the period, many of which were included in La Revue des Peintres which featured lithographic prints after paintings, watercolors and drawings by contemporary artists of the period.
