Sir Hubert Von Herkomer

Sir Hubert Von Herkomer - The Babes in the Wood

The Babes in the Wood

Sir Hubert von Herkomer's original etching and drypoint engraving, "The Babes in the Wood" is printed upon thick wove paper and with full, large margins as published by London, J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited for The Art Journal in 1881. This impression is signed by the artist in the plate with the artist's characteristic 'H H' monogramme (lower center) and bears the text, "An Original Etching by Hubert Von Herkomer A.R.A." and the title, "The Babes in the Wood" under the etching, as published for the British annual, The Art Journal.

Many of Sir Hubert von Herkomer's etchings -- particularly his figure studies -- deal with the Bavaria of his early childhood. Early German folklore and related literature was one of his lifelong interests and in this beautiful etching and drypoint engraving the children are no doubt fascinated by one of the more frightening folk tales. The sitters for "The Babes in the Wood" were Herkomer's own children.

Herkomer was equally well received for his paintings, sculptures and etchings. In this latter medium he was a tireless experimenter and he became accomplished in all forms of original graphic art. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire (1883-1904) and was the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894.
Herkomer as well wrote a great deal upon the arts. His most famous books include "Etchings and Mezzotint Engraving", which was published in 1892, and his autobiography, "My School and my Gospel", published in 1907. In 1896 Hubert von Herkomer was Knighted by Queen Victoria.
Herkomer’s most highly respected works of art are his portraits and figure studies. During his career he both etched and engraved such portraits of contemporary composers and artists as Richard Wagner, Seymour Haden, Holman Hunt and Cecil Lawson. Many of his great figure studies, such as "Babes in the Wood" concentrated upon the world of children.
"The Babes in the Wood" was published by London, J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited for The Art Journal in 1881.
