Sir Hubert Von Herkomer

Sir Hubert Von Herkomer - John the Smith and his Daughter from An Idyl

John the Smith and his Daughter, from, 'An Idyl'

Sir Hubert Von Herkomer's musical play, called, "An Idyl" proved to be a great success and Herkomer etched at least five works of art dealing with the play. This original etching depicts the play's two main characters, John the Smith and his daughter. Herkomer has hand signed this impression in pencil under the lower right plate mark. He rarely hand signed his etchings and thus this impression may be a proof, or gifted to a close friend. "John the Smith and his Daughter, from, 'An Idyl'" is a fine, original example of the nineteenth century art created by the British artist, Sir Hubert von Herkomer.

Title: John the Smith and his Daughter, from, 'An Idyl'
Artist: Von Herkomer, Sir Hubert (Bavaria, 1849 - Hertfordshire, 1914)
Date: 1889
Medium: Original Etching
Note: Sir Hubert von Herkomer: A prominent member of the Royal Academy, Royal Water-Colour Society and the Royal Engravers, Hubert von Herkomer left Bavaria for Southampton in 1857 and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Herkomer was equally well received for his paintings, sculptures and etchings. In this latter medium he was a tireless experimenter and he became accomplished in all forms of original graphic art. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire (1883-1904) and was also the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894. Herkomer as well wrote a great deal upon the arts. His most famous books include Etchings and Mezzotint Engraving, which was published in 1892, and his autobiography, My School and my Gospel, published in 1907. In 1896 Hubert von Herkomer was Knighted by Queen Victoria.
Herkomer's teaching experiments at Bushey's Herkomer School of Art in some ways foreshadow contemporary methods. He believed that training in the visual arts must be related to studies in all the other arts and crafts. To this end in 1888 and 1889 both he and his students were at work upon An Idyl, which Herkomer termed a 'pictorial-music play'. Hubert von Herkomer wrote the script, composed the music and acted in the leading role; John the Smith. His students assumed the other acting and singing roles. An Idyl was first performed at the Herkomer Theatre, Bushey in June, 1889. Dr. Hans Richter conducted the orchestra.
An Idyl proved to be a great success and Herkomer etched at least five works of art dealing with the play. This original etching depicts the play’s two main characters, John the Smith and his daughter.
