Sir Hubert Von Herkomer's original soft ground etching", The Hop Gardens of England" was published in 1883 for a portfolio which contained original engravings and etchings, two were by von Herkomer, a lanscape view of the hop gardens of England and a portrait of the British artist, Cecil Lawson. This engraving is printed upon fine quality Japon paper and with full margins as published by the Fine Art Society, London and printed by James S. Virtue, London for "Cecil Lawson: a Memoir" by Edmund W. Gosse. in the limited edition of two hundred impressions.

In The Hop Gardens of England, Sir Hubert Von Herkomer depicted the Kentish Hop Gardens so dear to the art of Lawson. It is a beautiful and expansive landscape, full of light and movement.

Note: Hubert von Herkomer: A prominent member of the Royal Academy, Royal Water-Colour Society and the Royal Engravers, Hubert von Herkomer left Bavaria for Southampton in 1857 and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Herkomer was equally well received for his paintings, sculptures and etchings. In this latter medium he was a tireless experimenter and he became accomplished in all forms of original graphic art. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire (1883-1904) and was the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894. Herkomer also wrote a great deal upon the arts. His most famous book, Etchings and Mezzotint Engraving, was published in 1892. In 1896 he was Knighted by Queen Victoria.
  The Hop Gardens of England originates from a portfolio entitled " Cecil Lawson: a Memoir" by Edmund W. Gosse published in London in 1883 in a limited edition of two hundred. The subject was a tribute to the recently deceased landscape artist, Cecil Lawson. For the portfolio, Herkomer provided this etching and a drypoint portrait of Lawson. Whistler also supplied an etching, entitled, Swan and Iris. In The Hop Gardens of England, Herkomer depicted the Kentish Hop Gardens so dear to the art of Lawson. It is a beautiful and expansive landscape, full of light and movement.

Condition: Printed on fine quality Japon paper and with full margins as published in the limited edition of two hundred in London in 1883 as published by the Fine Art Society, London and printed by James S. In this original etching, Herkomer combines drypoint with hard and soft grounds of etching to create a very complex yet delicate work of art.
