Sir Hubert Von Herkomer

Sir Hubert Von Herkomer - Portrait of Cecil Lawson

Portrait of Cecil Lawson

Sir Hubert Von Herkomer's portrait of the artist, Cecil Lawson is anoriginal drypoint engraving. Cecil Gordon Lawson (1851-1882) was born in Shropshire of Scottish parents. He came to London at the age of ten and exhibited his first painting there eight years later. Beginning first as a floral painter, Lawson soon became a major landscape painter and watercolourist and a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy and other major venues. Despite his brief life of only thirty-one years many scholars maintain that Cecil Lawson is one of England's greatest nineteenth century landscape artists.

"Portrait of Cecil Lawson" is an original drypoint engraving by Sir Hubert Von Herkomer published by the Fine Art Society, London and printed by James S. Virtue, London for the portfolio entitled, "Cecil Lawson: a Memoir" by Edmund W. Gosse in 1883.

Herkomer was equally well received for his paintings, sculptures, engravings and etchings. In these latter mediums he was a tireless experimenter and he became accomplished in all forms of original graphic art. He founded and directed the Herkomer School of Art at Bushey, Herfordshire (1883-1904) and was also the Slade Professor of Art at Oxford University from 1885 to 1894. Herkomer as well wrote a great deal upon the arts. His most famous books include Etchings and Mezzotint Engraving, which was published in 1892, and his autobiography, My School and my Gospel, published in 1907. In 1896 Hubert von Herkomer was Knighted by Queen Victoria. Sir Hubert von Herkomer based this drypoint engraving upon a watercolour portrait of Cecil Lawson made in 1877. The watercolour portrait is housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London, NPG 3889.
