Note:	Louis Emile Adan: A leading nineteenth century and early twentieth century painter and illustrator, Louis Emile Adan studied under Cabanel and Picot at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He exhibited his art annually at both the Paris Salons and with the Societe des Aquarellistes Francais from 1863 to 1937. Louis Emile Adan received medals from these institutions in 1875, 1882, 1889 and 1900. He was also awarded the Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur in 1892 and the Prix Bonnat in 1931.
	Louis Emile Adan's illustrated books include Fables de La Fontaine and Un coeur simple. Public museums in Paris, Lyon, Rouen and Saint-Etienne include examples of his original art in their permanent collections.
	Charles Jean Louis Courtry 'Charles Courtry': A French nineteenth century artist, Charles Courtry studied etching techniques in Paris under Flameng and Gaucherel. His first large etching, Le Marche d'esclaves (after Gerome) was exhibited in Paris in 1868. From that date he was a frequent exhibitor and received medals from the Paris Salon in 1874, 1875, 1887 and 1889. In 1881 Charles Courtry was decorated with the Legion d'honneur.
	The Ferryman's Daughter was commissioned for a portfolio entitled, Fifty Choice Examples of Modern Etching, published in London around 1890. Limited to an edition of 500, the publication included original etchings by Whistler, Haden, Legros, Chattock, Birkett Foster, Herkomer, Haig, David Low, Charles Courtry and others.
