Axel Haig 'Axel Hermann Haig'

Axel Haig - An Old German Mill

An Old German Mill

Axel Haig travelled through Germany and Italy for part of the 1880 year "An Old German Mill" is one of the etchings he created as a result of this trip. In the foreground merchants unload their produce for market. The mill and its occupants appear across the river. A miller stands at the top of the steps. To the right a man carries away his sack of flour. Below him women wash their laundry, while above him another hangs the clothes to dry. This most interesting, ancient edifice is thus both a mill and a household.

"An Old German Mill" is an original etching created by the fine British artist, Axel Hermann Haig in 1880. It is printed upon thick wove paper, dated and signed by the artist in the plate with his characteristic monogramme and also bears the title, "An Old German Mill" and the text, "Drawn and Etched by A. H. Haig" under the etching as published by London, J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited for The Art Journal in 1881.

Haig studied etching in his spare hours and within several years began producing the architectural views that made him famous. His art in this medium quickly gained national recognition and Axel Haig became a regular exhibitor at the prestigious Royal Academy. He was also a full member of the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers.
In total, Axel Haig created over four hundred etchings, the majority depicting castles, towers and cathedrals in both England and on the Continent. The Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London, own a large collection of his etched art.
