Note:	Alfred Cossmann: A highly regarded Austrian engraver and etcher, Alfred Cossmann moved to Vienna in 1885. He took lessons there in figurative drawing and painting from Professor Karger and then studied etching and engraving techniques under Professor William Unger, at the Academy of Fine Arts. At the turn of the century, Alfred Cossmann began exhibiting his fine engravings which included figure studies and portraits of King Louis II of Hungary and Beethoven. Altogether he created more than two hundred graphic works of art. The Cabinet des Estampes, Vienna, lists many of Alfred Cossmann's engravings in its permanent collection.
	Alfred Cossmann was a full member of the Vienna Kunstlerhaus (1905) and a founding member of the Austrian Exlibris Society (1903). During his career he received such major awards as the Golden State Medal (1913), the Emperor's Award (1916) and the Decoration of the Austrian Republic. Alfred Cossmann was also a very influential teacher of engraving at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt. Among his students were Hans Ranzoni, Friedrich Teubel, Hubert Woyty, Karl Haselbock and Rose Reinhold.
	Alfred Cossmann's talents at capturing form and detail led him to become Austria's greatest engraver of ex-libris bookplates. Ex-Libris Franz J. Kaiser is a most important example of his art in this field. Franz J. Kaiser was the Director of the Dairy Ministry, Vienna. Symbolically, Alfred Cossmann portrays him cradling a large barn in his arms.
	Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by "The Studio", in London, "Pan", in Germany, "The Print Connoisseur", in America and "Vervielfaltigende Kunst", in Vienna.
	"Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, its superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market.
