Leopold Gottlieb - Barmherzigkeit

Barmherzigkeit

Leopold Gottlieb's original lithograph, "Barmherzigkeit" is printed upon textured, laid paper and with large, full margins as commissioned and published by Vervielfaltigende Kunst in 1920. This impression is titled, credited and bearing the publisher's address along the lower margin and the registration mark. Barmherzigkeit is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the Polish artist, Leopold Gottlieb, one of Poland's greatest masters of twentieth century art.

Title: Barmherzigkeit
Artist: Leopold Gottlieb (Drohobycz, Poland, 1883 - Paris, 1934)
Date: 1920
Medium: Original Color Lithograph
Publisher: Vervielfaltigende Kunst, Vienna
Note: Leopold Gottlieb: A major Polish twentieth century painter and printmaker, Leopold Gottlieb studied art in Krakow from 1896 to 1902 at the School of Fine Arts. He then concluded his studies in Munich in 1903. In 1906 Gottlieb accepted a position teaching painting techniques at the School of Fine Arts of Bezalel, in Jerusalem. Two years later he moved to Paris and began exhibiting his art there at the Salon d'Automne (1908-1928), the Salon des Independants and la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts (1910-1912). At the same time Leopold Gottlieb's paintings and prints were also shown at major Secessionist exhibitions in Vienna, Berlin, Barcelona and Berne.
Leopold Gottlieb returned to his native Poland at the beginning of the First World War (1914-1918) and fought with the Legions de Piludski. He remained in Po0land after the war participated in many national exhibitions in both Krakow and Varsovie. He also became a leading member of the Polish art movement, "Rythme". Gottlieb's last move was back to Paris in 1926. During his final years he exhibited there with the Salon de Franc (1926-1929) and at the Galeries des Quatre Chemins.
In both his paintings and lithographs Leopold Gottlieb became most famous for his fine portraits and figure studies. In the former category he painted the portraits of Jules Pascin, Andre Salmon, Helena Rubenstein, Diego Rivera and others. Several of his great portraits were included in the recent "l'Ecole de Paris, 1904 - 1929" exhibition held at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 2001. In his figure studies and compositions Leopold Gottlieb became an outspoken opponent of violence and inhumanity. Today his beautiful art is now fully appreciated for its strong and sure sense of design and for its spirit of freedom and humanity. These elements are clearly in evidence in Barmherzigkeit. Note: The British Museum, lists a signed impression of Barmherzigkeit in their permanent collection, Registration number: 1921,1012.58.
Edition: This impression of Barmherzigkeit appears to be a proof -- that is, an impression pulled from the stone before the printing of the regular edition. Usually only working proof impressions contain the registration bar or cross, seen here along the lower center margin. As well, notice the introduction of red areas (particularly on the kneeling man) which Leopold Gottlieb has added using his fingertip. In this impression the artist therefore is still experimenting with form and color, making this a most valuable example of how Gottlieb actually created his art.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany, The Print Connoisseur, in America and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna.
Vervielfaltigende Kunst issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch, Polish and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, Vervielfaltigende Kunst became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, its superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, Vervielfaltigende Kunst is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market.
Size: 9 3/4 X 9 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials

Titled, credited and bearing the publisher's address along the lower margin. Also bearing the registration mark.
