Peter Halm's original etching and drypoint engraving, Schmiede in Schwangau (Blacksmith's Shop in Schwangau) is one of several works of art commissioned and published by the German publishing company, Vervielfaltigende Kunst during the last years of the nineteenth century. It is one of his works of art that scholars use to point to the similarities between his etchings and those of Whistler. In particular, it is comparable Whistler's etching, The Blacksmith. Although both of these etchings are quite different, there is no doubt that Halm and Whistler share a mastery in their utilization of space and depth. By using a sparsely detailed foreground, Peter Halm brilliantly leads our eyes to focus upon the figure of the working blacksmith in the darkened background. This original etching and drypoint engraving is printed upon fine hand-made paper and with large, full margins as commissioned and published by Vervielfaltigende Kunst in 1894. Schmiede in Schwangau is a fine, original example of the etched art created by the German artist, Peter Halm. |

| Note: | Peter Halm belongs to the first rank of late nineteenth and early twentieth century German etchers. His remarkable creativity influenced an entire generation of artists and helped to raise the graphic arts in Germany to a level equal to any nation in the world. A master of landscapes, portraits and figure studies, Halm's original etchings remain a cornerstone of late nineteenth century art. |
| Born in Mainz, Peter Halm's artistic education began at the Polytechnikum in Darnstadt. From 1875 to 1882 he was a student at the Kunstakademie, Munich, under both Raab and Lofftz. In 1895 he was appointed Professor of Etching at the Munich Academy, a position he held until his death. From this influential post, Halm taught many of Germany's finest printmakers of the early twentieth century. | |
| Peter Halm's first published etching dates from 1883. In the following decades he etched many scenes in Germany, France and Italy. Like Whistler (with whom he has often been compared), Halm etched most of his plates directly from nature, lending a freshness and spontaneity to his work. Major museums in Germany, England, France and the United States include examples of his fine etchings in their permanent collections. | |

| Vervielfaltigende Kunst: During the early twentieth century leading art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest prints from this vital era were commissioned and published by "The Studio", in London, "Pan", in Germany, "The Print Connoisseur", in America and "Vervielfaltigende Kunst", in Vienna. | |
| "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" issued it first original etching in 1871. During the following sixty years it published masterworks by Austrian, German, Czech, Swiss, French, Dutch and English artists. More internationally focused and less conservative than most of its rival publishers, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" became a spearhead for the vibrant experiments of Symbolist, Expressionist and Secessionist artists during the initial decades of the twentieth century. Also, it superb printing techniques were second to none. As a result, "Vervielfaltigende Kunst" is now regarded as a most vital fine art publisher of its day and individual prints from this publication are eagerly sought after on the international market. | |
