Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau - Ex Libris Stasys Pilka We Are Such Stuff as Dreams ARE

Ex Libris Stasys Pilka (We Are Such Stuff as Dreams Are)

An original wood engraving by the Lithuanian/American artist, Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau, Ex Libris Stasys Pilka (We Are Such Stuff as Dreams Are) was created in 1975. Stasys Pilka was a Lithuanian/American actor and director, and since both the artist and the owner of the bookplate resided in Chicago, it is more than likely that they were familiar with each other’s work. Virkau provides a fitting quotation for the actor’s ex libris design with Shakespeare’s, “We are such stuff as dreams are … (made of).” A number of Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau’s ex libris prints are housed in the collection of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, including an impression of Ex Libris Stasys Pilka.

Title: Ex Libris Stasys Pilka (We Are Such Stuff as Dreams Are)
Artist: Virkau, Vytautas Osvaldas (Siauliai, Lithuania, Born, 1930)
Date: 1975
Medium: Original Engraving
Source: Ex-Libris-Bookplate
Note: Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau: Born in Lithuania in 1930, Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau fled to the West in 1944. At the end of the Second World War he studied art techniques at the Lithuanian Gymnasium in Munich, Germany (1946-1949). Virkau left Germany for the United States in 1951 and attended classes at both the University of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He gained his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute in 1956.
Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau first worked as an art instructor in 1954. From 1961 to 1985 he was a professor in the George Williams College of Art, Downers Grove, Illinois. Virkau then served as Head of the Department of Fine Arts at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois (1966 to 1969). In 1970 he was also the designer and art editor of the publication, “Metmenys”.
Vytautas Virkau created his first ex libris design in 1970. Since that time the artist has contributed over four hundred bookplates and well as illustrating over fifty books. Since 1956 Virkau has exhibited his prints and paintings at such institutions as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Midwestern Printmakers, the University of Illinois and the Contemporary Arts Association, Houston, Texas. Created in 1975, Ex Libris Stasys Pilka (We Are Such Stuff as Dreams Are), is a striking original example of his Ex-Libris art.
Stasys Pilka: Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1898, Stasys Pilka studied acting at the Petrograd Alexandra Theatre School (1918) as well as studying at the Petrograd Military Medical Academy (1919-1921). During this period he acted in both the Petrograd State Grand Theatre and the National Grand Theatre. Pilka was a member of the Lithuanian Artists Dramatic Society from 1921 to 1926 and from 1929 to 1944.
In 1944 Stasys Pilka fled to the West (the same year Vytautas Virkau managed his escape from war torn Lithuania). He settled in Chicago in 1948 and during that year he founded the Lithuanian Theatre Company there. He also served the Company as its director and as a leading actor. Stasys Pilka died in Chicago in 1976. This original engraved Ex-Libris bookplate was created by Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau for Stasys Pilka in 1975.
An original wood engraving by the Lithuanian/American painter and graphic artist, Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau, Ex Libris Stasys Pilka was created in 1975. Since both the artist, Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau, and the owner of the bookplate, the Lithuanian/American actor and director, Stasys Pilka resided in Chicago, it is more than likely that they were familiar with each other’s work. Created in circular format, the scene depicts a 'cupid / angel' holding out two laurel branches. The text surrounding the image reads; "Ex Libris Stasys Pilka. We Are Such Stuff as Dreams Are. In many countries, the laurel is a symbol conferred as a mark of honor and victory for such achievements as obtaining a degree from a university or college, or for the victors of an athletic competition. This is a striking, original example of the Ex-Libris art of Vytautas Osvaldas Virkau.
Ex-Libris-Bookplates: Ex-Libris engravings, etchings and woodcuts date as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as miniature prints or stamps used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and titles and the finished work of art came to stand as the owner’s claim to posterity. Before long, famous artists were commissioned by prominent collectors to make their ex-libris designs and during the centuries such masters as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great form of art.
