Adrian Feint (Adrian George Feint)

Adrian Feint - Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond Landscape with Tree and Swirling Prints

Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond (Landscape with Tree & Swirling Prints)

Adrian Feint's original wood engraving, Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond (Landscape with Tree & Swirling Prints) dates from 1938. Feint is undoubtedly Australia's most famous artist of the ex libris bookplate. The most complete collection of his fine art in this field is housed in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Sydney, and will be found under the title, Adrian Feint Bookplates. Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond is listed under their accession number, NGA 77.101.1.149. This original wood engraving depicts a landscape view of a giant old tree on a hill overlooking the water with a sailboat in the distance. Here, the artist has created a moving picture within a landscape, the old tree is bending with the force of the wind, leaves and art prints (possibly representing Elizabeth's collection of ex libris prints) are swirling in every direction and both the land and water seem to unite in silent motion. It is not surprising that Adrian Feint's bold rendering of the lines, curves and tones create a striking work of art. Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond is a fine, original example of the engraved art created by the 20th century Australian artist, Adrian George Feint.

Note: Adrian Feint 'Adrian George Feint': One of Australia’s finest twentieth century artists, Adrian George Feint began his formal education in 1912 at the Sydney Art School, under Julian Ashton and Elioth Gruner. In 1916 he served with the Australian Army on the Western Front and remained there until the end of the First World War (1918). As a reward for his service he was granted three months leave to study art in Paris at the Academie Julien. Feint then returned to Sydney and began designing covers and illustrations for such publications as Art in Australia.
Feint’s first etchings date from 1922 and at this time he began exhibiting them with both the Society of Artists, Sydney, and the Australian Painter-Etchers Society. He produced his initial wood engravings in 1927, while studying design concepts with Thea Proctor. During the following four years his engraved bookplates were commissioned by such notables as the Duke and Duchess of York, Dorothea Mackellar, Frank Clune, Olive King and Elizabeth Watson Diamond.
In 1930 the ex-libris designs of Adrian George Feint received international attention with a one-man exhibition at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. Beginning in 1932, Feint devoted more and more of his efforts to still-life painting, developing another strong reputation in this genre.
Adrian Feint created at least two ex libris engravings for the Diamond family. J. (Jack) Edouard Diamond and Elizabeth Watson Diamond were the founders and owners of both the Hyacinth Press and the Diapure Press in Cleveland, Ohio. They commissioned such leading artists as Kalman Kubinyi, Rockwell Kent, John William Jameson, Paul Landacre, Valentin Le Campion (France), Vitezslav Fleissig (Czechoslovakia), Enrico Vannuccini (Italy), Adrian Feint (Australia), John Austin (England), Thijs Mauve (Holland) and Leslie Victor Smith (Canada) to create some of the most striking ex libris plates of the 1930's and 1940's for their personal collection. The Irene D. Pace Collection of the Diamond Family Bookplates is housed in the permanent collection of the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library, Yale University.
A Note on Ex Libris Art: Ex-Libris woodcuts and etchings have their beginnings as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as plates used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and the finished work of art often came to stand as an owner’s claim to fame. Before long famous artists were commissioned by wealthy collectors to create their ex libris designs and during the centuries such great talents as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great genre.
The golden era for ex-libris art was during the twentieth century, most particularly in the Art Deco decade of the 1930’s. Collecting of ex-libris etchings, engravings and wood engravings reached such a height at this time that many artists devoted themselves almost exclusively to this area.
