Dennis Colbron Pearse - Lowing his Bayonet A Boy in the Peninsular War

Lowing his Bayonet (He) Demanded Who I Was. (A Boy in the Peninsular War)

Dennis Colbron Pearse, an English/Australian artist, illustrator and arts administrator created this original pen and ink drawing before moving to Hobart, Tasmania in 1922. In 1923 "Lowering his Bayonet (He) Demanded Who I Was " an illustration for (A Boy in the Peninsular War) entered the New York City Collection of Paul F. Franco. Franco built an extensive collection of art, ephemera and manuscripts dealing with Napoleon and the Napoleonic Wars. His seal and acquisition date are on the verso of this original Dennis Pearse drawing.

Dennis Colbron Pearse has written the title of this original drawing along the lower margin. It was created for an illustrated edition of "A Boy in the Peninsular War", and this title appears in the upper margin of the drawing. "A Boy in the Peninsular War" is the autobiography of Robert Blakeney (1789-1858), who served as a subaltern in the 28th Regiment of the army of Great Britain in the Peninsular War (1807-1814).

Dennis Pearse quickly came to the attention of the founder of the Boy Scouts, Baden Powell and, in 1911, he was awarded the 'Silver Wolf'. He was the second adult to receive this honour, after Baden Powell.
Around 1908, Dennis Colbron Pearse turned his attention to illustrated books and writing articles on Scouting. During the First World War (1914-1918) he designed posters for the military. After migrating to Tasmania in 1922, Dennis Colbron Pearse helped to establish and enlarge the Scouting movement there. He was appointed Assistant Chief Commissioner of the Tasmanian Chapter in 1928, Acting Secretary in 1929, and Secretary until 1936. He also edited an illustrated Scouting section in the Illustrated Tasmanian Mail and founded a Scouts Employment agency in Hobart.
Dennis Colbron Pearse designed a seal and medal for the Royal Society of Tasmania in 1927. The medal was awarded to those who contributed to the research environment of Tasmania over a long period of time. During this year Dennis Pearse became a staff member of the Tasmanian Museum and Arts Gallery, Hobart.
