Aglaus Bouvenne - Ex Libris Charles Asselineau La Femme Qui N'est Pas La Colombe Et Le Roseau Est Un Monstre

Ex Libris Charles Asselineau (La Femme Qui N'est Pas La Colombe Et Le Roseau Est Un Monstre)

Aglaus Bouvenne's original etching, Ex Libris Charles Asselineau has long supplied scholars with an enigma. The motto reads, "La Femme Qui N'est Pas La Colombe Et Le Roseau Est Un Monstre" -- 'The woman who is not both the dove and the reed is a monster'. The meaning behind this puzzling phrase remains to this day unknown. Perhaps the answer lies in a passage of one of the books written by the plate's owner, Charles Asselineau, or in the poetry of his close friend, Charles Baudelaire. The symbolism most commonly associated with the dove is spirituality, purity, love or the soul, and with the reed, fragility or flexibility. In any case a person lacking in most of these qualities might certainly be a monster. This is a most compelling, original example of the ex libris art created by the French artist, Aglaus Bouvenne.

Title: Ex Libris Charles Asselineau (La Femme Qui N'est Pas La Colombe Et Le Roseau Est Un Monstre)
Artist: Bouvenne, Aglaus (Paris, 1829 - Levallois-Perret, 1903)
Date: c. 1870
Medium: Original Etching with Plate Tone
Note: Aglaus Bouvenne: An artist and arts author, Aglaus Bouvenne was a pupil of Narcisse Diaz. He first exhibited his art at the Paris Salon in 1872 but was most active in the area of creating ex libris etchings. Among his best known designs for ex libris art are those for Alexis Martin (1868), Victor Hugo (1870), Theophile Gautier (1872), Champfleury (1874), Octave Uzanne (1882), Edouard Castellon (1882), the Countess of Noe (1888) and Charles Asselineau (undated). Bouvenne's personal bookplate was designed and etched by Felix Bracquemond (1833-1914) in 1875. Aglaus Bouvenne was a member of the Council Societe Francaise.
Aglaus Bouvenne was the author of a number of notable books, such as, Theodore Chasseriau: Souvenirs et Indiscretions, Victor Hugo: Ses Portraits et ses Charges, and Les Monnogrammes Historiques d'apres les Monuments Originaux. He also penned biographical catalogues on the art of Bonnington and Lemud and on the etchings of Charles Meryon.
A Biographical Note: Charles Francois Alexandre Asselineau (Paris, 1820 - Chatelguyon, 1874) was a writer, bibliophile and the first biographer of Baudelaire. He initially studied medicine but quickly turned to literature. His books include The Double Life (1858), Bibliophile Hell (1860) and Andre Boulle, Cabinetmaker to Louis XIV (1872).
Charles Asselineau first met Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) in 1845. Becoming a close friend he was instrumental in publishing some of Baudelaire's prose and poetry, including Les Fleurs du mal (1857). Asselineau wrote, Charles Baudelaire, His Life and Work, in 1869.
A Note on Ex Libris Art: Ex-Libris woodcuts, wood engravings and etchings have their beginnings as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as plates used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and the finished work of art often came to stand as an owner’s claim to fame. Before long famous artists were commissioned by wealthy collectors to create their ex libris designs and during the centuries such great talents as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great genre.
The golden era for ex-libris art was during the twentieth century, most particularly in the Art Deco decade of the 1930’s. Collecting of ex-libris etchings, engravings and wood engravings reached such a height at this time that many artists devoted themselves almost exclusively to this field.
