Louis Henri de Rudder's original lithograph, Dance of Nautch Girls is is a 'Proof Impression' based upon a design created by Prince Alexis Dmitrievich Soltykoff. It hails from, Voyages dans L'Inde, first English delux edition, printed by Auguste Bry, Paris and published by Smith, Elder & Co., London in 1859. 'Nautch' in Hindu simply means dance. Nautch girls were India's professional dancers. This scene depicts the Nautch girls entertaining a young Prince, seated to the right. As well as being finely rendered, this original lithograph is important as a historical record, particularly in the costuming and the depictions of the various musical instruments. The New York Public Library includes an impression of Dance of Nautch Girls in its permanent collection. This is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the French artist, Louis Henri de Rudder.

Note: Louis Henri de Rudder: A fine 19th century French painter, lithographer and engraver, Louis Henri de Rudder studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris (Paris School of Fine Arts), and was a student of Antoine-Jean Gros and Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet. His paintings and graphic art consisted of historical subjects, genre, and portraiture, dating as far back as the 1830's, and into 1880. Louis Henri de Rudder made his debut at the Salon in 1835 where he was awarded medals in 1840, 1848, and 1848. Louis de Rudder was made Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1863.
  Rudder created a series of lithographs depicting the peoples of of India for, Voyages dans L'Inde, first published by August Bry (1850), based upon the designs created of Prince Alexis Dmitrievich Soltykoff (St. Petersburg, Russia, 1806 - Paris, 1859), which Prince Soltykoff sketched from life while traveling through India between (1841-1846), such works included, Maharaja Sher Sing of the Punjab and his entourage out hunting, Cavalcade of Sikh of Chieftans on Elephants, Elephants of the Raja of Travandrum, Procssion de la Deesse Kali. (Calcutta Octobre 1841), and other fine lithographs. Louis Henri de Rudder's original lithograph, Dance of Nautch Girls is based upon a design by Prince Alexis Soltykoff, and hails from the first English delux edition (containing proof impressions), printed by Auguste Bry, Paris and published by Smith, Elder & Co., London in 1859. Today, original works of art by Louis Henri de Rudder are included in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Musee d'Orsay, France, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and other important private and public institutions. The New York Public Library includes an impression of Dance of Nautch Girls in its permanent collection, Identifier, NYPL catalog ID (F-number): b12160088.
  Prince Alexis Dmitrievich Soltykoff: Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, 1806, Prince Alexis Dmitrievich Soltiykoff, also spelt, 'Alexei Dmitryevich Soltikov'', and 'Alexis Dmitievich Soltykov', was a foreign diplomat, illustrator and author. After moving to France in the 1840's, Prince Alexis Soltiykoff traveled through India, Sri Lanka, Persia and surrounding area from 1841 to 1846, after which he authored and illustrated various historical volumes that dealt with the social life and customs of India and Persia with views and scenes in Sri Lanka, Madras, Travancore, Luckow, Calcutta, Delhi, the Himalayas and surrounding area. Such fine works include, Lettres sur L'Inde, published in Paris by Amyot (1848), Voyage en Perse (1854), Voyages dans L'Inde et en Perse (1853), Voyages dans L'Inde (1850), and other important literary works. Prince Soltykoff died in Paris in 1859. Today, original works by Prince Alexis Dmitrievich Soltykoff are included in the permanent collection of The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The J. Paul Getty Trust Research Institute, Patrick Power Library, McGill University Library, and other important private and public institutions.
  During the nineteenth century no land held as much fascination for the British people as that of their richest colony, India. Here was a fully developed culture that had advance along completely different lines. 'Nautch' in Hindu simply means dance. Nautch girls were India's professional dancers. This scene depicts the Nautch girls entertaining a young Prince, seated to the right. As well as being finely rendered, this original lithograph is important as a historical record, particularly in the costuming and the depictions of the various musical instruments.
  From the early 1820's, England had established itself as the leader for lithographic, topographical views. Samuel Prout and James Duffield Harding created numerous views of localities within France, Germany and the British Isles. The last named artist, in fact, developed the lithographic tint stone, where a separate printing of china white was applied over the finished lithograph. Such is the case here with Dance of Nautch Girls by Louis Henri de Rudder which was designed by Prince Alexis Dmitrievich Soltykoff.
  Smith, Elder and Company was a large early Victorian publishing house which concentrated upon both individual lithographs and engravings and upon illustrated books. It issued its first works of original graphic art in 1827 and remained in business until 1865.

Condition: Printed by Auguste Bry, Paris and published by Smith, Elder & Co., London in 1859 for, Voyages dans L'Inde, first English delux edition (containing proof impressions), Marked 'Proof' by the publisher, meaning this was one of the first impressions taken from the stone. It is a superb, fully tinted impression and in excellent condition throughout. This large lithograph represents a valuable historical record of mid nineteenth century Indian life and culture.
