"Portraits of a Royal Matrimony" are a pair of Northern Indian or Persian minature paintings. Created around 1875, this masterful pair of paintings, with their strong elements of detail, color and form are fine examples of miniature art from this period. They portray the husband and his bride. Both portraits depict the man and the woman holding a rose, symbolizing their love. Here, The artist is stressing their union through symmetry. A comparison of the paintings shows exacting mirror images, even down to the landscape formations in the windows. Note:	Illuminated miniature paintings were meant to adorn hand-written volumes. The birth of the printing press in the West severely diminished the use of this splendid and exacting art form, but masterpieces of illuminated miniatures continued to be created in Persia and in India during the nineteenth century.
	Invariably, these paintings are by unrecorded hands - the artist choosing anonymity in order for the viewer or patron to judge the art on its own merits. The measure of a truly great miniature painter was his ability to produce a sense of convincing depth and space on a small surface. This masterful pair of paintings, with their strong elements of detail, color and form are fine examples of original works of art from this period. The utilization of painstakingly detailed floral patterns both in the borders and throughout the images themselves is quite amazing. Obviously, these paintings portrayed a very important Royal man and wife. This pair of paintings celebrates a royal wedding. Note that both the man and the woman are holding a rose, symbolizing their love. The artist here is stressing their union through symmetry. A comparison of the paintings shows exacting mirror images, even down to the landscape formations in the windows.

Condition:	Painted on thin, nineteenth century paper of Asian origins and with full margins.
