Note: John Austin Sands Monks 'J. A. S. Monks': A nineteenth century American painter and etcher, John Austin Sands Monks studied art and etching techniques in New York under George Inness. These two artists shared the same studio for many years. J. A. S. Monks devoted his art almost exclusively to animal depictions, particularly sheep. He was a full member of the Salamina Club, the New York Etching Club, the Boston Art Club and the Copely Society.
  John Austin Sands Monks began exhibiting his art at major institutions in 1874. His first published etching was created in 1883. For the following twenty years original etching was a large part of his artistic oeuvre. Feeding Sheep, first exhibited in Boston in 1883, is a fine, early example of his talents in this field.

Condition: Printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as printed by G. W. H. Ritchie in 1883. Signed in the plate to the lower left. A strong, deeply printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. Feeding Sheep represents a fine, original example of the 19th century animal art of John Austin Sands Monks 'J. A. S. Monks'.
