Note: John Austin Sands Monks 'J. A. S. Monks': A nineteenth century American painter and etcher, John Austin Sands Monks studied art in New York under George Inness. These two artists shared the same studio for many years. Monks devoted his art almost exclusively to animal depictions, particularly sheep. He was a full member of the Salamina Club, the New York Etching Club, the Boston Art Club and the Copely Society.
  J. A. S. Monks began exhibiting his art at major institutions in 1874. His first published etching was created in 1883. For the following twenty years original etching was a large part of his artistic oeuvre. Driving the Sheep is a fine example of his talents in this field.

Portfolio, Some Modern Etchings: This original etching was drawn and etched by John Austin Sands Monks. It was commissioned by the New York publisher, White Stokes & Allen in 1884. Besides John Austin Sands Monks' "Driving the Sheep" other original etchings included in this portfolio are "Testing the Toledo" drawn and etched by Frank Waller, "A Tramp" drawn and etched by Gabrielle D. Clements, "An Old Master at Last" by Elliott Daingerfield based on a design by Walter Satterlee, "The Clarionet Player" by Katherine Levine based upon a design by H. Kauffmann, "My Ain Fireside" drawn and etched by S. G. McCutcheon, "Portrait of Rembrandt" by F.S. King based upon Rembrandt's painting, "The Evening Star" drawn and etched by Walter Satterlee, "The Ponte San Trinita" drawn and etched by Joseph Pennell and "Never too Late to Mend" drawn and etched by James Wells Champney.

Condition: Printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with wide, full margins as published in New York in 1884 by White, Stokes & Allen. Signed and dated in the plate to the lower right. Containing some foxing in the outer margins, else a deeply printed impression with full plate tone and in good condition. Driving the Sheep represents a fine, original example of the 19th century animal art of John Austin Sands Monks 'J. A. S. Monks'.
