Title: At Low Tide
Designer: Poynter, Sir Edward (Paris, 1836 - London, 1919)
Advertiser: Pears Soap Company, London
Date: 1914
Medium: Original Lithograph Printed in Colours
Publisher: Pears Soap Company, London
Note: Sir Edward Poynter: When Pears Soap commissioned Sir Edward Poynter for their 1914 fine art lithograph, they were clearly soliciting Edwardian England’s most decorated artist. Born in Paris, Edward Poynter studied art both in France and at the Royal Academy Schools in London. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1861 and by 1867 had become on of England’s greatest neo-classical painters. Sir Edward Poynter became a full member of the Royal Academy in 1876 and served as its President from 1896 to 1918. He was also Director of the National Gallery from 1894 to 1906. Known best as a master of classical and academic nude studies, At Low Tide is a typically fine example of Sir Edward Poynter’s famous art.
Pears Soap Early Advertising: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries one English soap manufacturer forever altered methods of advertising and its relationship to fine art. Founded by Andrew Pears in 1789, the company had long enjoyed prosperity, but during the second half of the nineteenth century the company’s novel and aggressive publicity campaigns left all competitors far behind. The best remembered example was securing the use of Sir John Everett Millais's painting “Bubbles” as an advertisement for Pears. At the time, Millais was unquestionably the most popular painter in Britain. After the advertisement appeared, he was vigorously attacked by the art world for at least a decade. Yet Bubbles became the most famous advertising poster of the nineteenth century and made Millais’s reputation throughout the world.
In the next decade the well suited marriage between Victorian art and Pears Soap was further intensified. The Directors of the company brought art to the larger public eye through ‘Pears Annual’, first published in 1891 and surviving until 1920. The illustrated Annual provided quality fiction as well as large, separately packaged prints for framing, such as this original example entitled, At Low Tide. The cost of the Annual, including its accompanying lithograph, was a mere sixpence! Obviously the company lost money on this publication. A finely printed full colour lithograph such as At Low Tide would have cost a considerable sum to print and publish. Yet by the First World War, thousands of British domestic walls bore fine art lithographs with the Pears trademark. The publicity was invaluable and other major companies soon began to use similar promotional advertising.
Today, original Pears Soap lithographs are avidly sought after. They are, however, exceedingly scarce. Most were framed at the time of publication and the results were disastrous. Late nineteenth and early twentieth century framers used the most acidic methods at hand. The result is that the overwhelming majority of these beautiful antique prints have quite literally rotted away in their frames.
Size: 25 1/4 X 17 1/4 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
Framed and Matted with 100% Archival Materials

Containing some chipping and staining in the outer margins, particularly along the upper margin where professional restoration work has been completed. Also bearing several slight creases throughout the image. Else a strong, finely printed impression maintaining all its original colouration. The 'Pears' label appears in the lower left corner. At Low Tide is a brilliant, original example of these most famous Pears advertising prints.
