Henry Clarence Whaite - Study of a Head

Study of a Head

Henry Clarence Whaite's original etching, Study of a Head was commissioned for the 1862 publication, Passages from Modern English Poets Illustrated by the Junior Etching Club. Other important British artists who contributed etchings to this publication included James McNeill Whistler, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell and Henry Moore. Each etching was meant to embellish one or several contemporary poems. Three nineteenth century poems dealing with the theme of ageing accompanied Henry Whaite’s original etching. The poets were St. George Tucker, Charles Caleb Colton and William Wordsworth. The opening lines from the poem entitled, Youth and Age by William Wordsworth (1770-1850) are quoted below;

"We talk with open Heart and tongue
Affectionate and true,
A pair of Friends, though I was young,
And Mathew seventy-two." *William Wordsworth

This original etching is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. It is signed with the artist’s ‘H. C. W.’ monogramme within the image to the lower left. It also bears the artist's name name "W. C. Whaite" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate. Study of a Head is a fine, original example of the nineteenth century genre art created by the British artist, Henry Clarence Whaite.

Date: 1861-62
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Day & Son, London

Note: Henry Clarence Whaite 'Henry Whaite': A leading nineteenth century landscape painter, mostly in the medium of watercolours, Henry Clarence Whaite first studied art techniques at the Manchester School of Design and then completed his education in London, both at Leigh’s School and at the Royal Academy Schools. Whaite first exhibited his art at the Royal Academy in 1851 and contributed to their annual exhibitions until 1904.
  Henry Clarence Whaite first visited the Conwy Valley in North Wales in 1851. Although he remained in Manchester for almost two more decades he made that mountainous region of Wales his permanent home (and his major source for artistic inspiration) in 1870. H. C. Whaite was an early member of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (1859) and a founding member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. He later served as President of both these institutions. He was also a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society and of the Junior Etching Club.
  Today civic galleries in Blackburn, Cardiff, Liverpool, Nottingham and Warrington include examples of the art of Henry Clarence Whaite in their permanent collections. Other impressions of his original etching, Study of a Head, will be found at the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, University of Glasgow and at the New York Public Library.
  Henry Clarence Whaite was a contributing member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Charles Rossiter, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, Matthew James Lawless, Walter Severn, Henry Stacy Marks, Frederick Smallfield, Arthur James Lewis, Frederick Bacon Barwell, William Gale, Joseph Clark, Sir Francis Powell and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and the above artists all contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. Study of a Head was H. C. Whaite’s sole contribution to Passages.

Henry Clarence Whaite's original etching, Study of a Head was commissioned for the 1862 publication, Passages from Modern English Poets Illustrated by the Junior Etching Club. Each etching was meant to embellish one or several contemporary poems. Three nineteenth century poems dealing with the theme of ageing accompanied Henry Whaite’s original etching. The poets were St. George Tucker, Charles Caleb Colton and William Wordsworth.

The first poem entitled, Youth and Age by St. George Tucker begins with a stanza from a poem written by James Montgomery which is quoted below;

"Till Youth's delirious dream is o'er,
Sanguine with hope we look before
The future good to find;
In age, when error charms no more,
For bliss we look behind." * James Montgomery.

The last lines of the poem entitled, Youth and Age written by St. George Tucker are quoted below;

"Days of my age, ye will shortly be past;
Pains of my age, but awhile ye can last;
Joys of my age in true wisdom delight;
Eyes of my age, be religioun you light;
Thoughts of my age, dread ye not the cold sod;
Hopes of my age, be ye fixed on your God." *The Hon. St. George Tucker

The opening lines from the Second poem entitled, Old Age written by Charles Caleb Colton are quoted below;

"Thou anti-climax in life's wrinkled page,
Worse end of bad beginning, helpless Age!
That sow'st the thorn, though long the flower hath fled'
Alive to torment, but to transport dead;
Imposing still through Time's still roughening road,
With strength diminished, an augmented load." *Charles Caleb Colton

And, the opening lines from the third poem entitled, Youth and Age by William Wordsworth are quoted below;

"We talk with open Heart and tongue
Affectionate and true,
A pair of Friends, though I was young,
And Mathew seventy-two." *William Wordsworth
