Henry Moore - Moonlight

Moonlight

Henry Moore's Moonlight is one of four original etchings he created for the 1861-62 publication entitled, Passages from Modern English Poets. Each etching was meant to embellish one or several contemporary poems. The two poems accompanying Moonlight were To the Moon & The Moon, both from the pen of William Wordsworth (1770-1850). The opening lines from the latter poem are quoted below;

"The' aspiring mountains and the winding streams,
Empress of night are gladdened by thy beams;
A look of thine the wilderness pervades
And penetrates the forest's inmost shades;" *William Wordsworth

In total, Passages from Modern English Poets contained forty-seven original etchings, all contributed by the members of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864). The other etchings Moore made for this portfolio are entitled, Dead Fallow Buck, The Elm Tree and Hen and Chickens. This original etching bears the artist's name, "H. Moore" as well as the publisher's name and date, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate as published for Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. Moonlight is a fine, original example of the landscape art created by the British artist, Henry Moore.

Title: Moonlight
Artist: Moore, Henry (York, 1831 - Margate, 1895)
Date: 1861
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: Day & Son in London
Edition: Passages from Modern English Poets Illustrated by the Junior Etching Club, 1862.
Note: Henry Moore: A famous nineteenth century marine and landscape painter, watercolourist and etcher, Henry Moore came from a large, Yorkshire family (he had fourteen brothers and sisters) of artists. Henry first received instructions from his father, William Moore (1790-1851), a portrait painter. His brothers, Edwin Moore (1813-1893), William Moore, Junior (1817-1909), John Collingham Moore (1829-1880) and Albert Joseph Moore (1841-1893) all became painters. Albert Moore, in fact, was a major neo-classical painter in the late nineteenth century.
  Henry Moore completed his artistic education first at the York School of Design and then at the Royal Academy Schools, London. Moore began exhibiting his art at the Royal Academy in 1853 and was a regular exhibitor there until his death in 1895. During his career he also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Water Colour Society, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. He was a member of the Royal Water Colour Society (1880) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (1883). Henry Moore was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1885 and became a full member in 1893. Such was Moore's reputation, particularly for his sea paintings, that the government of France awarded him the Legion d'honneur at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.

In his 1905 monograph, Henry Moore, R. A., Frank Maclean writes;
"As an etcher, Henry Moore worked principally for his own satisfaction, and is therefore only known to the very few. At a very early age he set himself to master the technical process; during the 'fifties he etched a good many copper-plates, very often working in collaboration with his brother Albert. Later in life he became a member of the Junior Etching Club, an institution which has ceased to exist, and contributed to its periodical exhibitions; … With the better understanding of the medium's possibilities came a greater simplicity, and some of the etchings he did for the Junior Etching Club … have delicacy and selective discrimination of a high order." *

  Henry Moore was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, John Tenniel, Charles Keene, M. J. Lawless and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and many (including Whistler and Moore) contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. Henry Moore contributed four original etchings to Passages from Modern English Poets, Dead Fallow Buck, The Elm Tree, Hen and Chickens and Moonlight. Impressions of Henry Moore's Moonlight will be found in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museums of Fine Arts and the New York Public Library.

The original etchings for Passages from Modern English Poets were meant to embellish one or several contemporary poems.The two poems accompanying Henry Moore's original etching entitled, Moonlight were To the Moon and The Moon, both from the pen of William Wordsworth (1770-1850). The opening lines from the latter poem are quoted below;

"The' aspiring mountains and the winding streams,
Empress of night are gladdened by thy beams;
A look of thine the wilderness pervades
William Wordsworth And penetrates the forest's inmost shades;" *William Wordsworth

The opening lines from the first part of the poem, To the Moon are quoted below;

"Queen of the Stars! so gentle, so benign,
That ancient Fable did to thee assign,
When darkness, creeping o'er thy silver brow,
Warned thee these upper regions to forego,
Alternate empire in the shades below--..." *William Wordsworth

  Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the publishers, Day & Son. The firm began in the mid 1820's under the title of 'Day & Hague' and assumed its more familiar name 'Day & Son, London' in 1845. Henry Moore's original etching, Moonlight was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62. Throughout their early years they printed and published works of art dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions, landscape scenes and topographical views.
