Sir John Tenniel - War and Glory

War and Glory

An original etching by Sir John Tenniel, War and Glory was the artist's contribution to the Junior Etching Club publication, Passages from Modern English Poets. Other British members who provided original etchings were James McNeill Whistler, Charles Keene and Sir John Everett Millais. Tenniel's War and Glory illustrates a poem of the same title by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834). In the poem Coleridge argues that because Britain's wars are fought in foreign lands, those remaining at home are guilty of treating such conflict as a sport or amusement. Very much seen in our day with such quaint expressions as 'smart bombs', this is reflected in the phrases and terminologies used to describe warfare. He writes,

"Terms which we trundle smoothly o'er our tongues,
like mere abstractions, empty sounds, to which
We join no feeling and attach no form!
As if the soldier died without a wound;
as if the fibres of this godlike frame
Were gored without a pang; as if the wretch
Who fell in battle doing bloody deeds
Passed off to Heaven translated and not killed;
as though he had no wife to pine for him,
No God to judge him." * Samuel Taylor Coleridge

There is no 'mere abstraction' in John Tenniel's War and Glory. The woman who embraces her dead lover for the last time feels all the horror and devastation of mankind's most brutal activity.

This original etching is printed upon wove paper and with full margins and is signed with the artist's familiar 'JT' monogramme within the etching to the lower left. It also bears the artist's name, "J. Tenniel" as well as the publisher's name and date, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate as published for Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. War and Glory is a fine, original example of the famous etched art created by the British artist, Sir John Tenniel.

Note: Sir John Tenniel: A premier Victorian era illustrator and cartoonist, Sir John Tenniel studied at the Royal Academy Schools and at the Clipstone Street Life Academy. In 1848 he illustrated an edition of Aesop's Fables which so impressed the editor of Punch that Tenniel became the magazine's second cartoonist in 1851 and its principal cartoonist in 1864, a position he held until 1901. John Tenniel was a full member of the New Watercolour Society (1874) and the Junior Etching Club (1857). As official recognition for his great cartoons and illustrations, John Tenniel was knighted in 1893.
  Sir John Tenniel contributed illustrations to such classic nineteenth century books as Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood (1858), Poets of the Nineteenth Century (1858), The Home Affections (1858), Lalla Rookh (1861), Parables from Nature (1861), Puck on Pegasus (1862), Arabian Nights (1863), The Ingoldsby Legends (1864) and A Noble Life (1870). As an illustrator his name, however, will always be linked to two of the finest illustrated books of any era; Lewis Carroll's, Alice in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872). Shortly after his death in 1914, Punch issued a special Tenniel Supplement as tribute to his life and art.
  As earlier noted, Sir John Tenniel was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, M. J. Lawless, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and many (including Whistler and Tenniel) contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862.

  Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the publishers, Day & Son. The firm began in the mid 1820's under the title of 'Day & Hague' and assumed its more familiar name 'Day & Son, London' in 1845. Sir John Tenniel's original etching, War and Glory was published by 'Day & Son, London' between 1861-62. Throughout their early years they printed and published works of art dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions, landscape scenes and topographical views.

Condition: Printed upon wove paper and with full margins and signed with the artist's familiar 'JT' monogramme within the etching to the lower left. Bearing the artist's name, "J. Tenniel" as well as the publisher's name and date, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate as published for Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. It also bears the plate's number "3" to the upper right corner of the margin above the image. Containing one small spot of foxing in the upper left margin else this impression is in excellent condition throughout without a trace of staining or fading. War and Glory stands as a moving, original example of the famous art of John Tenniel.

The 'Junior Etching Club' (1857-1864)
The Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), was an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Members included such prominent British artists as, Sir John Everett Millais, James McNeill Whistler, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Sir John Tenniel, Charles Samuel Keene, Joseph Clark, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite, Matthew James Lawless, Arthur James Lewis, Henry Stacy Marks, Charles Rossiter, Vincent Bury, Lord G. Fitzgerald, J. R. Clayton, John Sleigh, and Lord Gerald Fitzgerald. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, first published by Day & Son Limited, Lithographers & Publishers, London, 1862. In total, that publication contained forty-seven original etchings. The Junior Club also issued, another important publication in 1858, Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood published by E. Gambart & Co, London. It was also illustrated by its members and contained thirty-four plates.
