Eduard Ruga

Eduard Ruga - Crucifixion Scene

Crucifixion Scene

Eduard Ruga's "Crucifixion Scene" is an original painting on paper (Monotype) created in 1956. It is a partly abstracted interpretation of Christ's crucifixion. The two thieves, in mortal anguish, are represented behind him. Eduard Ruga's use of color, line and form, however, makes it clear that Christ's spirit and force are undying. "Crucifixion Scene" represents a fine, original example of the art created by the Estonian/American artist, Eduard Ruga.

Title: Crucifixion Scene
Artist: Ruga, Eduard (Estonia, 1903 - New Jersey, 1997)
Date: 1956
Medium: Original Painting on Paper (Monotype)
Note: Eduard Ruga: A twentieth century Estonian/American artist, Eduard Ruga was known for his oil paintings, watercolors and acrylics. He first exhibited his paintings in his native Estonia and also served as a professor of art there.
In 1945 the Soviet Union occupied Estonia and Ruga fled with his family to the United States. Eduard Ruga then settled in New Jersey and supported his family as a chemical worker. He continued, however, to paint and participate in local exhibitions, particularly around the communities of Ridgewood and Lakewood.
Today the Eduard Ruga Papers are housed at the Immigration History Research Center, College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota.
A Note on the Monoprint: Monoprinting (also termed 'monotype') is quite literally a singular form of printmaking. As the name implies only one impression can be created and some critics even argue that the medium should be classified as a form of painting. Briefly, the artist paints an image on a flat surface, usually glass. A sheet of paper is then immediately impressed onto this surface. Under the hand of a skilled artist the combination of paint and pressure yields a unique work of art with distinctive textural qualities. Such great masters from the past as Castiglione, Blake and Degas excelled in this medium. Eduard Ruga's "Crucifixion Scene" is a splendid illustration of the monoprint.
