Reinhold Kalnins

Reinhold Kalnins - Notre Dame Paris

Notre Dame, Paris

Reinhold Kalnins's "Notre Dame, Paris" is an original etching and drypoint engraving created by the Estonian artist around 1925. This impression of Notre Dame, Paris is printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as printed in Paris at the date stated. It is signed by the artist in pencil to the lower right. This engraving represents a fine, original example of the architectural art and city views by Reinhold Kalnins.

Title: Notre Dame, Paris
Artist: Kalnins, Reinhold (Pernau (or Parnu), Estonia, c. 1895 - ?)
Date: c. 1925
Medium: Original Etching and Drypoint Engraving
Note: Reinhold Kalnins: A twentieth century Estonian painter, pastelist and printmaker, Reinhold Kalnins studied art in Paris at the Academy of Montparnasse. He began exhibiting his work in the French capital in 1921 and during the following years was a regular contributor to shows at the Salon d'Automne, Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Independants. Reinhold Kalnins first became well known as an artist of figure studies, nudes and as a portraitist. Several years later he was also creating fine landscapes and architectural views.
Reinhold Kalnins travelled extensively and both lived and worked in such countries as Spain, Switzerland and Sweden. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, in fact, he moved permanently to Sweden. He was awarded a major state prize for his art in Stockholm in 1947. National museums in Goteborg, Malmoe, Paris and Riga include examples of his fine art in their permanent collections.
Created almost entirely in the demanding drypoint medium, Notre Dame, Paris is a superb example of Reinhold Kalnins's art. Although not numbered in a specific edition it is quite probable that the artist created only a handful of impressions, as an applied layer of ink has been wiped or brushed by Kalnins within the sky, water and walkways. Thus he would arduously hand work each impression (rather like monoprinting) which would prohibit a large edition. As one can see, his painterly approach created magnificent tonal values. It also however, risked damage to the surface of the plate, and one can detect several slight scratch marks on the actual plate, particularly in the water and on the bridge.
Size: 9 3/8 X 11 5/8 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed upon hand-made, laid paper and with full margins as printed in Paris around 1925. Signed by the artist in pencil to the lower right. Containing the aforementioned scratch marks from plate wiping, else a superb impression with full burr and plate tone and in good condition throughout. Notre Dame, Paris represents a prime, original example of the art of Reinhold Kalnins.
