William Raphael's original lithograph, Rural Bliss is printed upon nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in Canada by the "Montreal Daily Witness" in the winter of 1885. This is a fine, original example of the art created by the Canadian artist, William Raphael and the historical sporting events and entertainments that took place in the week long Montreal Winter Carnival during the late 19th century.

Title: Rural Bliss
Artist: Raphael, William (Prussia, 1833 - Montreal, 1914)

Medium: Original Lithograph Printed with Tint Stone
Publisher: The Montreal Daily Witness, Montreal Canada
Note: William Raphael: One of Canadas greatest artists of the nineteenth century, William Raphael emigrated to New York in 1856 and settled permanently in Canada the following year. He began his career in Montreal chiefly as painter of portraits. He also taught extensively, both on his own and in secondary schools.
In the 1870's and 1880's, Raphael began to expand his oeuvre, painting some of the most famous genre studies and landscapes in the history of Canadian art. He became a charter member of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1880.
William Raphael was also a talented lithographic artist. In fact, he published a complete volume of his lithographic work in 1895. "Rural Bliss" is one of Raphael's premier lithographs.
Note: "The Montreal Daily Witness" and the "Montreal Daily Star" became major Canadian publishers of original lithographs and wood engravings with the popular rise of the Montreal Winter Carnival. Beginning in 1883, the Carnival was Canada's initial Winter event and predated Quebec City's Carnival by eleven years. The week long Carnival was clearly no small undertaking. Sporting events and entertainments were scheduled throughout the city and a towering ice castle was constructed from which highly elaborate attacks and defences were staged. The sporting events included tandem sleight racing, tobogganing, snow-shoeing, curling and the recently invented sport of ice hockey.
Because of the carnival's widespread popularity competing Montereal publishers commissioned the services of Canada's greatest artists to commemorate the events. The "Montreal Daily Witness" was particularly well represented with the skills of such artists as William Raphael, Harington Bird and Robert Harris. The imaginative and original works of art these famous artists made at this time stand as valuable historical documents of the nineteenth century Canada.
