Harrington Bird - The River Boulevard

The River Boulevard

Harrington Bird's original lithograph, "The River Boulevard" is printed upon 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published by the Montreal Daily Witness in 1885. This scene depicts a sleigh race that took place during the celebrations of the Montreal Winter Carnival that year. This is a fine, original example of the historical lithographic art created by Harrington Bird and of Canada's famous nineteenth century Montreal Winter Carnival.

Note: Harrington Bird: Born into a British military family in India, Harrington Bird studied art at the Royal Academy in London in 1868. He emigrated to Montreal in 1877 in order to assume the post of Director at the Montreal School of Art. Within several years he had also become the professor of art at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. His paintings and prints were widely exhibited and Bird became best known for his sporting art and genre scenes. Shortly before his return to England in 1888, Harrington Bird was elected an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy.
In Britain Bird continued to exhibit his art at many institutions, including the royal Academy, London. During this period he designed large etchings of major English race horses, with particular emphasis on Derby champions.
The Montreal Daily Witness and Montreal Daily Star became major Canadian publishers of original lithographs and wood engravings with the increasing popularity of the Montreal Winter Carnival. From its beginning in 1883 the Carnival was Canada's first winter event and predated Quebec City's carnival by eleven years. This week long carnival was certainly no small undertaking. Sporting events and entertainments were scheduled throughout the city and a towering ice castle was sculpted from which highly elaborate attacks and defenses were staged. The sporting events included tandem sleigh racing, tobogganing, snow-shoeing, curling and the recently invented game of ice hockey.
Because of the carnival's widespread popularity competing Montreal publishers commissioned the services of Canada's finest artists to commemorate the events. The Montreal Daily Witness was particularly well represented in this aspect with such artists as William Raphael, Harrington Bird and Robert Harris. The imaginative and original works of art these famous artists made at this time stand as a valuable historical document of nineteenth century Canada. These lithographs and wood engravings are also very scarce.
