This scene depicts an evening view of the ice palace created for the celebrations of that year. It is a fine, original example of the historical lithographic art depicting Canada's famous nineteenth century Montreal Winter Carnival.

Note: The Montreal Daily Star: The Montreal Daily Star (Founded in 1867) became a major publisher of original Canadian prints particularly in regard to the Montreal Winter Carnival. Beginning in 1883, it was Canada's first large winter celebration and predated Quebec City's Carnival by eleven years. The Montreal Carnival was clearly no small event. In the centre of the festivities was constructed a towering ice castle, from which sham military attacks and defenses took place throughout the city during the week. These included tandem sleigh racing, tobogganing, curling, skating and recently invented sport of ice hockey. As well, a highlight of the winter celebration was the masquerade. During the 1880's the winter carnival became a hugely successful event. The Montreal Daily Star and competing publishers thus hired Canada's greatest artists to commemorate the activities. One need only mention that three of the major artists covering the Carnival at the time were Henri Julien, William Raphael and Robert Harris. Their original lithographs in this field stand as an important historical and artistic document of nineteenth century Canada. A large majority of these lithographs were printed by the 19th century Canadian printer, the Burland Lithographic Co. in Montreal.
