Jacob Pins (Yaacov Pins)

Jacob Pins Yaacov Pins - Harbour

Harbour

Jacob Pins - Harbour: An original woodcut by the major German / Israeli artist, Jacob Pins, Harbour represents both a large and scarce example of his oeuvre. Published in an edition of only thirty-three impressions it is a masterwork of form and texture and of light and shade. Here, as with many of his woodcuts, Jacob Pins, (Yaacov Pins) utilizes the grain of the wood as a major compositional element. As well, in Harbour the two primary inspirations for the art of Jacob Pins -- the woodcuts of German Expressionism and the woodcuts of Japanese Ukioy-e -- are clearly evident. This impression is printed upon mulberry paper and with full margins as published by Jacob Pins in 1955. It is signed, dated and numbered, '22/33'in pencil by Jacob Pins (in both English and Hebrew) along the lower margin.

Note: Jacob Pins 'Yaacov Pins': Born in Hoexter, Germany, Jacob (sometimes spelt, 'Yaacov') Pins attended the local high school there. Because of ever increasing Nazi restrictions he began preparations for his emigration to Palestine in 1933. Three years later he was permitted to leave Germany and departed for Palestine. Plans were made for his family to follow him but sadly war broke out. His parents were imprisoned in concentration camps and murdered in 1944 at the Riga ghetto, Latvia, along the rest of Hoexter's Jews.
Jacob Pins lived and worked in a Kibbutz in Palestine until 1941. There he endured extreme poverty and was disabled by polio. When the Kibbutz closed down he set off for Jerusalem with literally only the clothes on his back. There Pins managed to secure a small grant in order to study under the Expressionist woodcut artist, Jacob Steinhardt (1844-1968).
Jacob Pins first exhibited his woodcuts in Tel Aviv in 1945. Since that time his art has been the subject of one man exhibitions in the United States (3), England, Germany, Australia, Columbia, Japan and elsewhere. In 1945, as well, Pins acquired his first Ukiyo-e woodcut. During the following years he established an important collection of 18th and early 19th century Japanese art which is now housed at the Israel Museum.
Pins was a founding member of the Jerusalem Art Society (1949) and established Jerusalem's Artists' House. In the early 1950's he also created woodcuts for two illustrated books, Tyl Ulenspiegl and Michael Kolhoz.
In 1956, Jacob Pins replaced Steinhardt as the teacher of woodcut and drawing techniques at the Bezalel Academy for Art and Design, Jerusalem. He was awarded a professorship from the Academy in 1978. Pins also became known internationally as a leading scholar of Japanese woodcuts. His book, The Japanese Pillar Print, was published in 1982.
In 1957 Jacob Pins was the recipient of the Ohara Prize at the Biennale for Graphic Arts in Tokyo. He was also awarded the Jerusalem Prize (1962) and the Shalom Prize for Jerusalem Artists (1993). His woodcuts are today housed in most major museums in Israel and at the British Museum, London. The most extensive collection of his art, however, is located at the Forum Jacob Pins in his native town of Hoexter.
