Arieh Merzer

Arieh Merzer - Portrait Study Safed

Portrait Study, Safed

Arieh Merzer's original watercolor, "Portrait Study, Safed", was created the by Israeli artist in 1962. It is painted upon smooth wove paper, signed and dated by the artist within the image. "In the summer of 1946 whilst I was getting acquainted with Safed for the first time, the city charmed me with her beautiful mysterious folk, her little streets with their oriental-mediaeval architecture and their wrought-iron balconies like fine embroidery. I was fascinated by the patriarchal Jews, remnants from the old Kabbalists who still walk in these Safed streets." *

Artist: Merzer, Arieh (Warsaw, Poland, 1905 - Safed, Israel, 1966)
Date: 1962
Medium: Original Watercolor
Note: Arieh Merzer: A prominent Israeli artist and metal worker, Arieh Merzer is most famous for his hand-hammered art in copper, silver and gold. He began his artistic education at the Academy of Arts, Warsaw, under Professor Adam Richtarsky. His first exhibition took place in Warsaw in 1928. Two years later Merzer moved to Paris and regularly exhibited his work at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. Shortly after the German invasion of France (1939), Arieh Merzer was imprisoned in a concentration camp. In 1943 he managed to escape and found freedom in Switzerland. At the end of the Second World War Merzer settled permanently in the Israeli city of Safed. Tragically, he lost his parents and each of his thirteen brothers and sisters to the Holocaust. He thus dedicated his art to all who had died.
During his distinguished career in Israel, Arieh Merzer was a regular exhibitor at the Tel Aviv Museum, the Artists' Pavilion, Jerusalem, and at the Museum of Modern Art in Haifa. He also received such awards as the Herman Struck Prize (1946), the Dizengoff Prize (1951 & 1965) and the Mayor of Haifa's Prize (1954).
