He completed his studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, under Gerome and Bonnat. During his career, James King exhibited both his etchings and paintings at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Boston Art Club, Parrish Art Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery, and with the Society of Independent Artists. James S. King was a full member of the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America and the New York Etching Club.
In his etched art, James King was equally well known for work based upon both his designs and the designs of other contemporary American artists, such as Douglas Volk and Jennie Brownscombe. His original etchings were primarily published in New York by both C. Klackner and Ripley Hitchcock.
Douglas Volk: An influential painter, teacher and writer, Douglas Volk studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, under Leon Gerome. He was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1898 and became a full Academician one year later. He was also a member of the Society of American Artists, National Arts Club, Society of Illustrators and the Century Association. Douglas Volk taught art techniques at both the Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design.
Douglas Volk received awards and medals from the Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893, the Society of American Artists, 1899, Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, 1901, St. Louis Exposition, 1904, National Academy of Design (Saltus gold medal), 1910, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1916. He was also awarded the Cross of Officer of the Order of Leopold II, Belgium. Today the art of Douglas Volk is included in most major American collections such as, the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Corcoran Gallery and the National Gallery, Washington, and the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York.
Douglas Volk was both a major oil painter and a muralist. He became best known for his portraits and scenes of colonial life. He painted a number of striking images dealing with New England's early Puritan culture. Accused of Witchcraft, of course, deals with the often tragic consequences of Puritan witch hunts. The painting upon which this original etching is based is housed at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.
The Nineteenth Century Proof Impression: In the late 19th century American and British publishers of large engravings and etchings would produce a number of proof impressions before publication of the regular edition. 'Proofs' were the first impressions to be pulled from the plate and before the addition of the title along the lower margin. Proofs thus constitute the finest impressions. As well, in the latter nineteenth century, proofs were printed on special papers, such as China or India papers, or on expensive materials such as silk or vellum. Proofs were the only impressions which were hand-signed by the artist or artists.
The New York publisher, C. Klackner issued proof impressions signed by his artists and designers. These included Winslow Homer, William Magrath, James S. King, Douglas Volk, Frederick Spiegle, John T. Bentley, Gustave Mercier, and Leon Moran and other late 19the and early 20th century notable artists. The majority of Remarque Proof impressions printed by Christian Klackner were usually limited to small editions. This is probably the case with Accused of Witchcraft.
