Date: c. 1885 - 1890
Medium: Original Etching
Publisher: C. Klackner, New York

Note: Eugene Michel Joseph Abot 'Eugene Abot': A French etcher, Eugene Abot studied printmaking techniques under Gucherel, in Paris. During his career, he illustrated a number of books with his art as well as contributing etchings to such periodicals as L'Art and the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Eugene Abot also created etchings after the designs of contemporary French and American artists.
John Leon Moran 'Leon Moran' belonged to one of America's most illustrious families of artists. His uncles, Thomas Moran (born, 1837 - died, 1926) and Peter Moran (born, 1841 - died, 1914), were prominent landscape painters and etchers. His father, Edward Moran (born, 1829 - died, 1901), was also an artist of note and also was John Leon Moran's first teacher. Preferring his middle name, Leon Moran finished his artistic education at the National Academy of Design, New York, and in London and Paris.
John Leon Moran remained in Paris until 1879. He returned to New York and established a studio there in 1883, although he often returned to Paris to work on various commissions. A master of both landscapes and genre scenes, Leon Moran was a frequent exhibitor with the National Academy. Leon Moran's art was awarded gold medals at the Art Club of Philadelphia, 1893, and at the American Art Society, 1902.
The 19th Century 'Proof': During the latter nineteenth century many major publishers of engravings and etchings in both England and America issued a small number of 'proof' s before publishing the regular edition. Proof s were struck before the title of the work was added along the lower margin and were printed on superior papers -- usually china, Japon or vellum. As well, proof s were the only etchings to be signed by hand by the etcher or designer, or both.
The New York publisher, C. Klackner, usually issued proof s signed by his artists and designers. These included Winslow Homer, William Magrath, James S. King, Frederick Spiegle, John T. Bentley, Gustave Mercier, and Edward W. Sharland, Eugene Michel Joseph Abot and Leon Moran. Between two Fires was not the only Moran work of art published by Christian Klackner. In 1886, he published Leon Moran's, Young Anglers. The 'Signed, Artist Proof s' for this etching were limited no more than one hundred s. It is likely that Between two Fires was published with the same number of signed, Artist Proof s.
