Wenzel Hollar Wenceslaus Hollar and Titian Tiziano Vecellio - Questo e Pietro Aretino Poeta Tosco This is the Tuscan Poet Pietro Aretino

Questo e Pietro Aretino, Poeta Tosco (This is the Tuscan Poet, Pietro Aretino)

Wenzel Hollar's original etching, "Questo e Pietro Aretino, Poeta Tosco" (This is the Tuscan Poet, Pietro Aretino) is based upon a study by Titian, 'Tiziano Vecellio'. It is a 'First State' impression printed upon seventeenth century hand-made paper in 1647.This portrait depicts one of the most feared and controversial Italian Renaissance authors of poetry, prose, plays, letters and other writings, Pietro Aretino. The text beneath the engraving reads; "Questo e Pietro Aretino, Poeta Tosco. Che d'ogni un disse mal, eccetto che di Dio, Scusandosi, con dir, non lo conosco. Titianus pinxit.,W. Hollar Fecit" which loosely translates to (This is the Tuscan poet, Pietro Aretino, who spoke ill of everyone, save God, as an excuse he said, Him, I do not know. Designed by Titian., Engraved by W. Hollar). it is a splendid example of the etched art created by one of Europe's greatest original etchers of the 17th century, Wenzel Hollar, also known as 'Wenceslaus Hollar'.

Medium: Original Etching
Note: Wenzel Hollar 'Wenceslaus Hollar': One of Europe's greatest original etchers of the seventeenth century, Wenzel Hollar first studied under Matthaus Merian in Prague. Shortly after 1636, the touring Earl of Arundel employed Wenzel Hollar as his topographical engraver, and later invited the artist to return to his English estate with him. With the exception of a one year absence, Wenzel Hollar spent the remainder of his life in England, leaving a masterful artistic record of the times and of his talents. Wenzel Hollar's art covers portrait, illustrative, costume, topographical and architectural subjects. Today he is regarded as a master etcher in all these fields.
Pietro Aretino (born, Arezzo, Tuscany, 1492 - Venice, 1556), was feared my many and was one of the most controversial Italian Renaissance authors of his time. Aretino was a prolific writer, his works embraced, poetry, prose, plays (comedies & tragedy) and other literary works which included religion, political satire, art, and certain material considered sordid by many. It has been noted that the name. 'flagello dei principe' (the scourge of princes) was inspired by the influence he held over the courts (men and women), and people in authority, due satirical writings that served to increase his power. Aretino wrote at least five comedies between 1525-1544. "Cortigiana" (1534) is considered one of his best, first performed in 1537. Pietro Aretino also wrote "Ragionamenti" (1534-1536), and the "Sonetti Lussoriosi", a work which included prints by the famous Renaissance artist, Marcantonio Raimondi, but by far it is deemed that some of his most daring works to be, the publication of his six volumes of letters (1537-1557).
Titian (Pieve di Cadore, c. 1487 – Venice, 1576): The greatest master of the Venetian School, Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) studied and trained under Giovanni Bellini, in Venice. As early as 1507, Titian was receiving government commissions and working alongside such artists as Giorgione. In 1516 he succeeded Bellini as the Official Painter to the Doge of Venice. By 1530 Titian’s clientele included most of the rulers and nobility of all of Catholic Europe. He was particularly patronised by Emperor Charles V and his son, Philip II, during the following years. In the 1540’s Titian assumed the unofficial role of portraitist to the Farnese, the family of Pope Paul the Third. As well such powerful figures as the Dukes of Ferrara, Mantua and Urbino continually vied for his portraits and mythological and religious scenes. As a result Titian became perhaps the most politically powerful artist of the Italian Renaissance. Titian’s influence has proved to be vast. Such masters as Poussin, Velazquez and Rubens have revered his art. This original Wenzel Hollar portrait of the famous Italian Renaissance poet, Pietro Aretino is based upon a study by Titian. Later impressions eliminated these lines by cutting down the plate. This engraving entitled, Questo e Pietro Aretino, Poeta Tosco (This is the Tuscan Poet, Pietro Aretino) is thus from the rare first state. The text beneath the engraving reads; "Questo e Pietro Aretino, Poeta Tosco. Che d'ogni un disse mal, eccetto che di Dio, Scusandosi, con dir, non lo conosco. Titianus pinxit., W. Hollar Fecit" which loosely translates to (This is the Tuscan poet, Pietro Aretino, who spoke ill of everyone, save God, as an excuse he said, Him, I do not know., designed by Titian., engraved by W. Hollar). The text was written for Pietro Aretino as his epitaph, and is Attributed to Giovio Paoli.
